Course Information
Description
Focuses on different firing techniques, including raku, sawdust firings, wood firing, saggars at different temperatures, primitive pit kilns, and low temperature techniques. Surface treatments to pots that enhance the uniqueness of the firing will be stressed. Students will manage firings. The class may include wood or salt firing. Students will read articles and give a report to the class about the subject. Each student must participate in kiln building, stacking, and managing the firings.

  1. You have the opportunity to explore and experiment with different firing techniques based on the use of wood, sawdust and salts, and develop problem solving skills necessary for innovative and competent results.

  2. Using forming techniques and surface applications that are appropriate to the firing techniques that will be explored.

  4. Learning about a specific firing technique and teaching the class how to use this technique.

  5. Appropriate surface treatments

  6. Developing problem solving and creative techniques necessary to do work with a material that involves multiple steps.

  7. Developing an awareness of local, global, cultural and historical aspects of three-dimensional arts.
