Course Information
Description
This class is for ceramic students that have already taken two ceramic classes and want to pursue their own project-based learning and find their own artistic voice. There is flexibility in the topics students choose to work with, yet the course will include research, technical exploration, writing artist statements, and documenting work. Working with faculty, students will set up self-directed goals and hold regular meeting to make sure goals are met and revised as needed.

  1. Create an independent study proposal

    Proposal includes a summary of goals and overall intent for the semester
    Use the writing process (first draft, review, edit, final draft)
    Speak or write to the instructor to confirm projects and goals
    Proposal includes a plan with goals, organized thoughts, and intentions
    Proposal goals are measurable and obtainable within the context of the course
    Proposal goals include elements of research and technique development

  2. Implement historical references and research findings

    Physical work project, written report
    Criteria
    Report references a historical topic of interest, such as an artist or art piece
    Report content aligns with your focus of study
    Report is logically organized
    Report is at least two pages
    Physical work project correlates to references chosen
    Physical work is critiqued

  3. Implement contemporary references and research findings

    Report references a contemporary topic of interest, such as an artist or art piece
    Report content aligns with your focus of study

  4. Create an artist statement

    Statement includes a description of your work such as materials, techniques, and forms
    Statement includes core ideas and/or questions you are exploring
    Statement explains your process or unique methods
    Statement includes any artistic, historical, or personal influences that are relevant to your work

  5. Deliver a midterm review (critique)
    Assessment Strategies
    Oral presentation
    Criteria
    Present the facts: your name, the title of the work, the year it was created, and its medium
    Describe the subject matter
    Describe the physical characteristics
    Describe the primary colors, shapes, and textures present
    Analyze your use of line, shape, form, color, value, texture, and space
    Analyze your use of design principles
    Explain the core concepts you explored
    Describe any symbolism within the work
    Judge your work

  6. Maintain a sketch book
    Assessment Strategies
    Written product-sketch book
    Criteria
    Sketch book includes drawings, notes, collections, and/or information related to your goals in the class
    Share sketches that relate to instructor guidelines
    Shared sketches align with your level of sharing comfort

  7. Deliver a final review (critique)

    Finished work, oral presentation
    Criteria
    Finished work is displayed in a professional style
    Finished work is a “showcase” of your independent study
    Presentation is 10-15 minutes
    Presentation summarizes the intentions, findings, and outcomes of your independent study
    Presentation connects your semester goals to the finished work
    Presentation describes your technical skill, creative process, and timeliness in completion of your finished work
    Judge your work

  8. Develop critical thinking skills

    Offer constructive critiques (feedback) of your own work and the work of classmates
