Course Information
Description
Students will learn a variety of styles and techniques, studying traditional and experimental approaches to working with this versatile medium. Emphasis on developing skill and control of major watercolor techniques including flat and graded washes, wet-into-wet, glazing, and dry brush along with understanding transparent color and the need to plan values in a watercolor composition. Students will learn to plan compositions while exploring a variety of subject matter and are encouraged to discover individual solutions to subject and style and use critical thinking toward problem solving. Critical thinking and analysis will be developed through group critiques and diverse assignments working from both still life and personal sources. Information will be presented through demonstrations, slides, and lectures. We will take one field trip to local galleries this semester.

Students will have the opportunity to learn the following skills in this class:apply a flat wash, apply a graded wash, apply and control wet-into-wet technique, glazing, negative painting, dry brush, compose a watercolor with an active and balanced value pattern, blend color, modulate color, create compositions, apply critical thinking to plan approaches to painting, assess and solve unexpected problems in your painting, mix color by glazing, mix color using wet-into-wet, understand transparent color, paint various textures
