Course Information
Description
Focuses on the development of skills such as fabrication/soldering, forming, bezel setting of cabochon stones, surface treatment and embellishment, and a variety of casting processes. Curriculum focuses on qualities unique to metalsmithing as a craft practice. Students gain an understanding of the discipline, while allowing for multiple traditional and experimental processes. Students are encouraged to develop their own creative vision exploring their ideas in metal.

Course Competencies
  1. Analyze positive/negative design and how to achieve this through pierce work
    Assessment Strategies
    Skill demonstration
    Criteria
    Explain characteristics of positive space
Identify elements that grab your attention and define the form
    Explain characteristics of negative space
Explain "empty" or background area that assists in defining the subject
Design is transferred effectively to sheet metal
Implement the process of saw, drill, file, and hand finish
Piercings and file work display defined edges with a smooth, consistent surface finish

  2. Produce simple ring bands
    Assessment Strategies
    Skill demonstration, ring
    Criteria
Use a B&S gauge to determine sheet metal thickness
Use skills like sawing, filing, soldering, and/or forming metal
    Produce three simple ring bands
Bands are sized to fit three different ring fingers
    Calculate measurement according to gauge
    Ring band fits correctly
Rings display a clean solder seam
Use skills like sawing, filing, soldering, and/or forming metal

  3. Create a double layered ring band
    Assessment Strategies
    Skill demonstration, ring
    Criteria
Measure and stretch for fitting, hand finishing
Outer band is decoratively pierced and slides to fit tightly over the inner band
The two bands are fit tightly so that they do not slip
Choice of metals highlights the well-defined pierce work

  4. Combine two or more different metals into a single, seamless design
    Assessment Strategies
    Skill demonstration, ring
    Criteria
Apply techniques of working non-ferrous metals: annealing, flattening, work hardening, and fitting butt soldered flat work
Metal choice produces a clean solder joint without pits
Metal choice is properly gauged and annealed so that the two surfaces line up to produce a smooth and consistent finish

  5. Create an object with surface embellishment (stamping, hammer texture, and roller printing)
    Assessment Strategies
Skill demonstration, object with surface embellishment
    Criteria
Prepare the metal surface adequately for the chosen technique
Demonstrate effective use and control of the chosen tool
Texture relates to the overall design of the finished piece
Use finishing technique that avoids elimination of the texture’s surface
Finished object is clean, with minimal tool marks outside of the intended design

  6. Sweat solder, simple forming-sinking-doming to create volume
    Assessment Strategies
Skill demonstration, object with sweat soldered applique
    Criteria
    Clean solder joint
    Avoid solder spills
Volume adds depth to the design
    Surface treatment is finished effectively
Sweat soldered applique is either pierced or textured
    Demonstrate simple forming-sinking-doming

  7. Create a cast wax carved ring or small object
    Assessment Strategies
    Skill demonstration, wax model
    Criteria
Apply the steps for burnout and casting
Prepare and/or mix investment according to instructions
Attach a sprue successfully to the wax model
Sprue is secure and properly positioned for a successful pour
Final object is identifiable as the original design
    Wax model meets instructor guidelines

  8. Bezel set a cabochon (non-faceted stone)
    Assessment Strategies
Skill demonstration, object with bezel set cabochon
    Criteria
Form and solder a bezel strip
Bezel fits snugly against the stone with no visible gaps between stone and bezel wall
    Bezel is the proper height
Bezel is smoothed to a clean finish
You avoid damage to the stone

  9. Demonstrate surface finishing and patination
    Assessment Strategies
    Skill demonstration, object
    Criteria
    Prepare the surface
Use the flexible shaft, polishing machine, sandblaster, or steel wool
Apply a patina or color to the object
Patina areas are appropriate to the design
Object uses patina to highlight pierce work, applique, and surface embellishment
    Object’s finish highlights the design
The integrity of the metal surface is maintained through the finishing process
Areas are resolved to an effective degree
Apply a simple seal or protective coating to the finished piece

  10. Demonstrate safety in the jewelry lab
    Assessment Strategies
    Skill demonstration in lab
    Criteria
Follow the guidelines for safety and care of tools
Tools and equipment are used effectively
Tools are used without causing damage to the tools or other people
Tools are used after having been instructed on their use
Tools are put away after use
Perform general clean-up activities as specified by the instructor

  11. Develop critical thinking skills
    Assessment Strategies
    Written product, verbal
    Criteria
Offer constructive critiques (feedback) of your own work and the work of classmates
Comment on aspects that are working well and things that can be improved
