Course Information
Description
A comprehensive course to introduce the tools and functions of four essential digital design programs. Learn to create and edit vector artwork in Adobe Illustrator, create and edit photographic content in Adobe Photoshop, develop 3-D forms with SketchUp, and build a website with Adobe Dreamweaver to display a portfolio of the art works and projects created. Out of class work time and reading and some writing is required in addition to in class instruction, work time and critique participation.

  1. Create an abstract composition in Adobe Illustrator
    Assessment Strategies
    Project – Artwork/graphic illustration
    Criteria
    student creates and saves a new document in the correct formats
    student uses linear drawing tools
    student uses shape tools (rectangle, ellipse, star, etc.)
    student uses selection and direct selection tool
    student uses transforming objects (move, rotate, scale, skew, etc.)
    student uses stroke and fill palette
    project is based on a historical artwork
    project transforms the inspiration/source material into an original work
    project reflects successful manipulation of color properties (hue, value, intensity) project develops into a dynamic composition through the use of color, line, and shape

  2. Create a color composition in Adobe Illustrator
    Assessment Strategies
    Project - Artwork/graphic illustration
    Criteria
    student creates and saves a new document in the correct formats
    student uses linear drawing tools
    student uses shape tools (rectangle, ellipse, star, etc.)
    student uses selection and direct selection tool
    student uses transforming objects (move, rotate, scale, skew, etc.)

    student uses type tool and edits font size and style

    project consists of 3 separate color variations of a single composition

  3. Create a Mash-up Collage in Adobe Illustrator
    Assessment Strategies

    Criteria
    student creates and saves a new document in the correct formats

    student uses selection and direct selection tool

  4. Create a hybrid self-portrait using Photoshop

    student imports at least two images from camera or other source

    student uses the layers palette
    student uses layer masks
    student selects a self-portrait
    project incorporates at least two images, including a self-portrait
    project includes a cropped image project displays a personal perspective on one's self image

  5. Create an abstract composition using Photoshop

  6. Create a short animation using Photoshop
    Assessment Strategies
    Project – 15-30 Second Animation
    Criteria
    student creates a storyboard to plot the animation
    student creates and saves file in correct formats
    student creates a stop motion animation
    student imports images from camera (or scanner) or artwork from Illustrator
    student uses at least three editing tools (lasso, quick selection, magic wand)
    student uses the layers palette
    student uses transparencies
    student uses layer masks
    student uses drawing tools
    student uses timeline
    student adds a soundtrack
    project is at least 15 seconds long and the elements used must exhibit some form of action, motion, or transformation

  7. Create 3-D Environment in SketchUp
    Assessment Strategies
    Project – Surreal 3D Rendered Artwork
    Criteria
    student creates and saves file in correct format
    student creates at least 3 shapes using drawing tools
    student creates extrudes 2D shapes into 3D forms with push/pull and follow me tools
    student edits 3D forms with move, scale and rotate tools
    student applies surface textures and colors
    student applies light sources
    student places rendered objects in an environment with realized surfaces and light sources
    project can be rotated and viewed in 360 degrees as you would view physical objects in actual space
    project demonstrates a convincing depiction of a physical space and is able to be seem in 360 degrees.

  8. Create a personal website
    Assessment Strategies
    Project – Working with web design tools and content for the web
    Criteria
    student accurately organizes source files in the finder
    student saves images and text for web from source files
    student imports images of work and text into Dreamweaver
    student uses design tools within Dreamweaver
    student applies HTML, CSS, and Java functionality to a web page
    Website exhibits clear navigation and accurate content and ease of use.
    website is operational in a web browser
    website includes an opening page, gallery viewer that contains Projects 1- 7 completed during semester as well as artist statement, resume, contact information pages
