Course Information
Description
This course explores a variety of drawing media and techniques through projects emphasizing subject/content relationships. Students will work to improve their drawing skills as they respond to various themes are presented as drawing challenges. Students can bring their own interest to drawing projects, and various drawing media can be used. Students will develop conceptualization skills preparing them for independent projects.

Course Competencies
  1. Create line and shape drawings
    Assessment Strategies
    Drawing
    Criteria
Three line and shape drawings are based on copositional strategies
Drawing 1 includes a still life composition with open approach
Drawing 2 includes the same subjects with specific copositional criteria provided by instructor
Drawing 3 includes the same subjects with added copositional criteria provided by instructor
Compare and contrast the three drawings to examine the preferred compositional approach

  2. Investigate specific value schemes
    Assessment Strategies
    Drawing
    Criteria
High key drawing includes whites or medium-light values
High key drawing subjects are shaded
Low key drawing includes a value range from black to medium dark
Low key drawing subjects are shaded
Chiaroscuro drawing exploits light and dark relationships as they pertain to shading
Compare and contrast the value schemes to examine how the perception of subject matter is affected by these specific approaches to shading

  3. Create a shallow space drawing
    Assessment Strategies
    Drawing
    Criteria
Shallow space drawing depicts subjects convincingly protruding from a foundation with a relief of no more than two inches
Shallow space drawing depicts of light and shade including cast shadows
Shallow space drawing accurately depicts trompe l'oeil (fool-the-eye) subject matter
Shallow space drawing deliberately minimizes the illusion of depth, making the picture plane feel more flat and close to the viewer

  4. Create a deep space drawing
    Assessment Strategies
    Drawing
    Criteria
Deep space drawing depicts an interior architectural space using linear perspective principles
Deep space drawing creates the illusion of a realistic, three-dimensional world on a two-dimensional surface

  5. Create a small drawing
    Assessment Strategies
    Drawing
    Criteria
Small drawing is no more than 9 square inches
Small drawing demonstrates a high awareness of detail
Small drawing includes a sensitive use of appropriate drawing material (silver point drawing, graphite pencils, or colored pencils)

  6. Create a large drawing
    Assessment Strategies
    Drawing
    Criteria
Large drawing is at least 30 by 40 inches
Large drawing depicts a very small object enlarged many times its actual size
Use cattle markers or paint sticks

  7. Create a texture drawing
    Assessment Strategies
    Drawing
    Criteria
Texture drawing includes an invented texture for each white, smooth object
Texture drawing includes actual texture to create pictorial imagery (frotage, collage, mixed media applications, etc.)

  8. Create an abstraction drawing
    Assessment Strategies
    Drawing
    Criteria
Drawing depicts an abstraction of an observed subject
Drawing demonstrates various strategies for abstracting a subject (simplify, exaggerate, repeat, overlap, distort, edit, etc.)
Abstraction drawing includes compositional principles of balance, unity, and variety
Abstraction drawing includes use of color schemes (analogous, complementary, triadic, etc.)

  9. Create an intentionally ambiguous drawing
    Assessment Strategies
    Drawing
    Criteria
Intentionally ambiguous space drawing depicts imagery that confuses the figure/ground relationships
Intentionally ambiguous space drawing creates spatial puzzlement in the perception of the viewer
Drawing is designed to be interpreted in multiple ways
Drawing simultaneously presents at least two interpretations
