Course Information
Description
The 1-credit Forensics Practicum is designed to aid students in developing and perfecting their public speaking and oral performance skills. There are four (4) forensics practicum classes which, if taken consecutively, offer students opportunities with virtually all aspects of forensics, such as developing materials, presenting pieces before various audiences, attending intercollegiate competitions, organizing contests or events, fundraising experience, critiquing/coaching experience, and opportunities to travel. By taking part in both Public Address (PA) and Oral Interpretation (OI) events, students become better public speakers and more well-rounded performers. Through community service or public relations projects, students can apply their skills in a real-world setting.

    Criteria

    You enhance the audience s enjoyment of a piece of prose literature, a poem or a dramatic excerpt through the effective use of your voice
    You facilitate the audience s understanding of a piece of literature, poem or dramatic excerpt through the effective use of your voice

  2. Demonstrate proficient public speaking skills
    Assessment Strategies
    By writing and presenting informative speeches
    By writing and presenting persuasive speeches
    Criteria
    You write and present speeches that are organized logically
    You write and present speeches that are motivationally appealing
    You write and present speeches that are ethically acceptable to both speaker and audience
    You write and present speeches that are culturally appropriate

  3. Demonstrate understanding of the performer/speaker-audience relationship
    Assessment Strategies
    By analyzing and evaluating given examples of public performance/public address
    By examining audiences' needs and expectations
    By evaluating your own performance for the purpose of self-improvement
    Criteria
    You analyze and evaluate a given example of public performance/public address for strengths/weaknesses of the structure of the piece/speech
    You analyze and evaluate a given example of public performance/public address for strengths/weaknesses of the oral performance
    You analyze and evaluate a given example of public performance/public address for strengths/weaknesses of the physical delivery
    You present your own performance/speech before a live audience which will provide both positive feedback and constructive criticism

  4. Demonstrate understanding of effective social interaction
    Assessment Strategies
    By acknowledging and respecting different opinions and ideas presented by others during their speeches/performances
    By demonstrating constructive feedback skills
    By contributing to team success by adhering to Madison Area Technical College s Student Code of Conduct both on campus and at events held off campus
