Course Information
Description
In this costume design workshop, students will analyze a script, research costume history, and create costume designs. Additional aspects of the course include an overview of costume planning and management, tours of the Madison Repertory Theatre and University Theatre costume shops, and the costume collection of the Wisconsin State Historical Society.

Course Competencies
  1. Analyze the script for character information
    Assessment Strategies
    By submitting a document listing character traits
    Criteria
    Includes the student's name, date, and topic
    Is word-processed or neatly handwritten, with accurate spelling
    Contains the following: play title, playwright's name, year the play was published, time period the play is set in
    Is organized by character, act, and scene and includes the following: character name, age, physical description, family relationships, religion, occupation, emotional states, and descriptions of clothing and accessories
    Indicates if the information was found in the dialogue of the play, or the stage directions, and includes references to the page number in the script where the information was found

  2. Explore the historical background of the play
    Assessment Strategies
    By submitting a document
    Criteria
    Includes the student's name, date, and topic
    Contains the following: play title, playwright's name and biography, date the play was written, and a brief summary of the play's production history
    Includes a general historical background of the time period that the play was written covering the geographical location of the play, economic conditions in the area, and political influences

  3. Create a preliminary costume plot
    Assessment Strategies
    By submitting a document
    Criteria
    Includes the student's name, date, and topic
    Is word-processed or neatly handwritten, with accurate spelling
    Is organized by character, act, and scene
    Contains a list of garments and accessories for each character

  4. Research visual images for costumes
    Assessment Strategies
    By creating a file of visual images for each character
    Criteria
    Contains the name of the student, date, and topic
    Is organized by character and contain a bibliography of each research source used. The bibliography will include the title, author, and library card catalogue for each reference source
    Contains visual images for each character's costume, based on the preliminary costume plot
    Contains visual images from the following categories: costume history books, art history books, magazines, photographs, portraits, catalogues, sewing patterns

  5. Determine costume sources
    Assessment Strategies
    By submitting a document delineating which costumes will be built, pulled, shopped, or rented
    Criteria
    Includes the student's name, date, and topic
    Is word-processed or neatly handwritten, with accurate spelling
    Is organized by character, act, scene, and costume number. Each costume will be put into one of the following categories: Built, Pulled, Shopped, or Rented. Once a category has been established, sources as to where the costumes can be located will be identified by business type. address, phone and fax number.

  6. Create costume designs for the director
    Assessment Strategies
    By creating design materials for each character
    Criteria
    Include character boards and sketches. Each character board and sketch will include the student's name, date, play title, character name, act, and scene
    Include character boards for shopped and rented costumes
    Include sketches for built costumes. Each sketch will include a verbal description of key design points such as neckline shape, garment and sleeve length, waistline delineation, embellishments, trims, and accessory items. Attach fabric swatches to each sketch
    Include a color pallette for each costume. The color pallette can be indicated by the use of fabric swatches, color zeroxes, paints or markers

  7. Create a quick-change plot
    Assessment Strategies
    By developing a flowchart of the costume quick-change process
    Criteria
    Contains the student's name, date, play title, and topic
    Depicts all of the items in the process
    Shows the relationship of one step to another
    Shows a clear understanding of the topic
    Shapes are used correctly
    Is neat, well organized, and chronoligically follows the action of the play

  8. Create a costume maintenance list
    Assessment Strategies
    By submitting a document
    Criteria
    Includes the student's name, date, and topic
    Is type-written, with accurate spelling
    Is organized by character, act, scene, and costume number
    Details maintenance procedures for each garment. Examples of maintenance include dry-cleaning, machine & hand washing (water temperature must be indicated), line drying, machine drying, pressing, steaming, shoe polishing, etc.

  9. Acknowledge the contributions of the various team members of the costume staff.
    Assessment Strategies
    list the various roles of the costume team.
    identify the resposibilities associated with each team role.
    Criteria
    engage in a group flow chart exercise.
