Course Information
Description
Students are introduced to education and teaching through practical experience in school settings, group discussions, and individual reflection. Each student will complete 50 hours of K-12 classroom observation. We will explore the relationships among education, curriculum, and instruction across contexts of home, community and school; connecting school practices with philosophical perspectives of education.

  1. Construct an individual initial professional portfolio

  2. Complete field experience requirements

    Criteria
    you identify the requirements of a field experience
    you apply for, and secure field experience position
    you prepare a journal using proper format as given on handout
    you journal about the learned experience from the field
    you give an oral presentation or participate in an online discussion, highlighting information gathered
    you evaluate the experience you write a thank-you note to your field host

  3. Identify ideas and questions related to teaching in schools in connection to the fieldwork experience

    by creating a list of the multiple functions of public education
    by writing an essay describing personal experiences as a learner
    by submitting journal of field experience

    you identify philosophical questions about education as examined in your field experience
    you answer questions prepared philosophical questions and relate your answers to your field experience

  4. Use components of major educational philosophies to build one’s own perspectives

    by submitting a concept map
    by writing an essay describing personal experiences as a learner as tied to educational philosophies
    Criteria
    you create a concept map from personal experience and from reading
    concept map includes the information and issues discussed in the class
    concept map is in graphic format
    concept map includes a paragraph to explain the map
    concept map is one page in length
    concept map exhibits correct and appropriate grammar, punctuation, spelling, syntax, and word usage
    you compose and essay describing your personal history as a learner
    essay includes specific school experiences as tied to educational philosophies
    essay is 2 1/2 to 4 pages
    essay follows an effective organizational plan
    essay follows prescribed format, meeting criteria for all components
    essay exhibits correct and appropriate grammar, punctuation, spelling, syntax, and word usage

  5. Describe issues relating to the teaching profession, including realities of the job and licensure issues
