Course Information
Description
Innovative approach to viewing stress as necessary and healthy, this course is designed to help individuals build resilience to stress. Combines interactive exercises, self reflective experiences, foundations of mindfulness based meditations, foundations of mindfulness based movements, guided imagery to improve mental focus, progressive muscle relaxation to aid deep relaxation, and specific breathing techniques to promote healthy self regulation and coping skills.

Course Competencies
  1. Analyze the role of stress in maintaining health and optimal performance
    Assessment Strategies
    Written reflection, Journal, Quiz, and/or Exam
    Criteria
    Explain the importance of the mind/body connection and adverse effects of stress on mental and physical health
    Outline the components of the multi-dimensional model of stress
    Describe physiological responses to stress
    Identify various exercises to reduce stress
    Identify other ways (besides exercise) to help relieve stress
    Assess your own stress level and vulnerability to stress
    Examine the role of physical exercise in reducing stress
    Create ways to incorporate stress-management techniques

  2. Practice stress management techniques
    Assessment Strategies
    Written reflection, Journal, Quiz, and/or Exam
    Criteria
    Participate in at least four stress management techniques such as mindfulness, guided imagery, progressive muscle relaxation, and breathing
    Complete required documentation showing techniques used with their duration and frequency
    Assess your physical effort while practicing the techniques
    Describe the effects of stress management techniques on health, self-regulation, and coping skills

  3. Develop a personal stress management plan

    Criteria
    Plan includes one short and one long term goal and motivations behind the goals
    Plan includes equipment, techniques, and/or tools used to manage stress
    Plan includes anticipated frequency and duration for equipment, techniques, and/or tools
