Course Information
Description
This course offers students an orientation to careers in the engineering disciplines. Activities will be focused on academic and career planning and exploration, with an emphasis on understanding similarities and differences in the work of technicians and engineers. Students will become familiar with different engineering and engineering technology programs at Madison College as well as transfer opportunities in these areas.

    Identify strengths and weaknesses of each survey
    Written paper includes analysis of strengths and weaknesses of each survey

  2. Investigate engineering-related careers and the continuum from technician to engineer

    Reflection
    Criteria
    Identify at least two current positions within the field of engineering and why they are interesting
    Describe a particular job using examples from those active in the field (guest speakers) and/or job databases
    Describe the duties and responsibilities of the job
    Describe typical working conditions
    Describe the educational requirements, employment history, work experience, or other requirements used to acquire the position
    Describe an estimated salary range

  3. Create an individual educational plan
    Assessment Strategies
    Written Product (Academic Plan)
    Criteria
    Create educational timeline for the duration of the top two chosen programs
    Summarize the requirements for three transfer institutions
    Identify the steps you need to take to obtain the necessary qualifications for a job in engineering
    Plan includes a general timeline for completion (two-year coursework schedule), including courses, costs, and/or experience for completion of degree requirements
    Use terminology effectively as it relates to a career in engineering

  4. Describe resources and services at the Truax Campus, UW Madison, and UW Platteville
    Assessment Strategies
    Written product - list of resources to assist with degree completion
    Criteria
    Identify resources at Madison College to assist in career exploration, such as interest, skill and values assessments
    Locate transfer and enrollment resources and services at Truax, UW Madison, and UW Platteville
    Define the programs within Truax, UW Madison, and UW Platteville
    Rationalize the use of resources and services
