Course Information
Description
This course provides the framework for a student to complete an individualized and in-depth global studies capstone project under the guidance of an approved faculty member. Faculty and student create a learning contract, establishing outcomes that align with our college’s global competencies. These credits can be used to fulfill the requirements for the Interdisciplinary Global Studies Certificate.

Course Competencies
  1. Identify an individual project that gives depth and meaning to specific coursework, research, and/or a study abroad experience
    Assessment Strategies
    Written product - a narrative included in the project proposal and submitted to the supervising faculty
    Consultation meeting with supervising faculty
    Criteria
    Identify a meaningful theme that runs through your coursework, research, and/or study abroad experience
    Choose an appropriate format for the final project (this may already be dictated by the supervising faculty)
    Consult with the supervising faculty for brainstorming, reflection, and approval
    Write 200-300 words and include the title of the proposed project, the project format, and a main idea or theme

  2. Establish a learning contract with the supervising faculty
    Assessment Strategies
    Written product - an outline included in the project proposal and submitted to the supervising faculty
    Consultation check-in meeting with supervising faculty
    Criteria
    Identify the steps required to complete the final project
    Include a weekly schedule with goals towards completion of the final project
    Include regular check-ins with the supervising faculty for the duration of the project
    Consult with the supervising faculty to find an agreed-upon, workable schedule

  3. Meet all weekly goals set forth by the learning contract
    Assessment Strategies
    Consultation and regular communication with the supervising faculty, through email and synchronous meetings
    Criteria
    Track progress towards goals and record completion
    Complete self-assessments, as requested by the supervising faculty

  4. Complete research and planning to develop the project with depth
    Assessment Strategies
    Skill demonstration, research documentation
    Criteria
    Get approval from supervising faculty for sources used (if applicable)
    Maintain notes on sources used (if applicable)
    Communicate progress regularly with the supervising faculty
    Do your own original work on the final project, with support from approved sources

  5. Demonstrate competency in at least three of the following: Cultural Awareness, Intercultural Communications, World Languages, International Travel, Global Citizenship and Global Work Skills

    Consultation and regular communication with the supervising faculty
    Final project
    Criteria
    Identify which three will be best demonstrated by the final project
    Consult with the supervising faculty about how these will be demonstrated
    Describe how your project meets the three outcomes
    Maintain regular communication with the supervising faculty
    Complete a self-assessment to identify your strength in these areas

  6. Communicate the value of the coursework, research, and/or study abroad experience and its impact on overall academic, personal, and/or professional development
    Assessment Strategies
    Consultation and regular communication with the supervising faculty
    Final project
    Criteria
    Identify the value of this work through brainstorming conversations with supervising faculty
    Include a statement in the final project that clearly conveys this value
    Complete a self-assessment to identify the impact of the certificate work

  7. Present the final product to at least one other person (in the form of a portfolio, a research paper, a presentation, or any other format approved by or required by the supervising faculty)
    Assessment Strategies
    Presentation of the completed project to at least one other person
    Criteria
    Identify the audience for this presentation
    Consult with the supervising faculty for any logistical guidance
    Complete the presentation within the timeframe specified by the supervising faculty
    Include introduction, clear explanation of the value of these experiences, support materials
