Course Information
Description
Students learn to manage the creative process through exercises and activities that lead to short stories and poetry; drama and creative non-fiction may be addressed as well. Reading assignments allow students to become familiar with principles and practice of various genres of creative writing and classroom activities prepare students for participating in workshop discussions.

Course Competencies
  1. Develop creativity and self-expression through use of a journal
    Assessment Strategies
    by writing at least three times per week
    by responding effectively to prompts, exercises, and methods
    Criteria
    you establish a regular writing habit/schedule
    you write at least three times per week
    you produce journal entries at least two pages long

  2. Demonstrate awareness of language and experience
    Assessment Strategies
    by completing a descriptive passage, using point of view and figurative language
    Criteria
    you apply descriptive language techniques
    you use metaphor, simile, and/or other figures of language
    you explore various points of view
    your writings are at least two pages long accoring to instructor's directions

  3. Write a short story
    Assessment Strategies
    by completing a short story
    Criteria
    you write at least five pages by specified date
    your short story includes techniques of narrative compression
    your short story includes the development of characters
    your short story includes the use of descriptive language techniques
    your short story includes the use of an identifiable point of view
    your short story includes the use of dialog to show rather than tell

  4. Demonstrate poetic form and technique
    Assessment Strategies
    writing poems using different formats
    Criteria
    you write at least three poems
    poems include the use of an appropriate format (e.g. free verse, ballad, haiku, etc.)
    poems include a compression message
    poems include the appropriate use of metaphor, simile, and other figurative language
    you poems include an observable rhythm

  5. Demonstrate dramatic form by drafting portions of a drama or film script
    Assessment Strategies
    by writing a film script or play
    Criteria
    you wirte at least ten pages
    film script of play includes the use of appropriate dramatic designations (e.e act, scene, etc.)
    film script of play is documented properly according to convention
    film script of play includes the use of dialog as a primary tool for exposition
    film script of play includes the development of a character through action
    film script of play includes stage direction
