Description
Examines the principles of management to include planning, organizing, human resource management, directing, and controlling as related to the health information department.

Course Competencies
  1. Summarize philosophies of management
    Assessment Strategies
    through a test, written report, and/or scenarios/case studies
    Criteria
    you identify and define five fundamentals of management
    you identify appropriate communication channels to maintain workflow for an assigned HIM work function
    you summarize the barriers to decision making
    you identify the steps in problem-solving
    you distinguish between ethical and unethical behaviors

  2. Perform planning functions of management
    Assessment Strategies
    using a case study, working in groups or individually, written report and/or oral presentation, and/or test.
    Criteria
    you analyze and recommend planning and time management steps per rubric or checklist
    you utilize a management planning tool per rubric or checklist (i.e. project management software, Gantt or PERT chart, etc.)
    you differentiate supervisory management planning terms and concepts. (vision, mission, goals, objectives, policies, procedures, long-range and short-term planning)
    you identify HIM department items to include in a budget by capital, operational, and personnel categories

  3. Demonstrate organizing functions of management
    Assessment Strategies
    through a written or oral individual or group report, case scenario/studies, and/or test.
    Criteria
    you recommend an organizational structure for a HIM department or health care organization per rubric
    you compare and contrast organizing terms and concepts
    you identify significant items to consider in HIM department layout
    you identify evaluation criteria for office equipment and/or software

  4. Perform Human Resource Management tasks
    Assessment Strategies
    through case scenarios, written assignments, role plays, and/or tests.
    Criteria
    you perform a job analysis
    you write a job description per rubric/checklist
    you create and conduct a role play of an interview, orientation, training, performance appraisal, continuing education, or coaching situation according to rubric/checklist

  5. Employ directing functions of management
    Assessment Strategies
    through a written paper, case scenarios, group classroom demonstration, and/or test
    Criteria
    you analyze your current leadership style per rubric
    you influence co-workers using appropriate leadership technique in a scenario of your choosing per rubric (i.e., participate on intra-departmental teams, committees, participate on facility-wide teams/committees responsible for health information service issues, plan and conduct meetings, responding to a conflict or customer complaint, etc.)

  6. Demonstrate controlling functions of management
    Assessment Strategies
    through an evaluation of case study/scenarios
    Criteria
    you critique the control measures used in a case study/scenario
    you recommend others that could have been used
