Course Competencies
  1. EXAMINE types of healthcare statistics and the ways in which they are applied
    Assessment Strategies
    Oral, written or graphic assessment
    Criteria
identify organizations that collect and maintain statistics
    describe healthcare statistical terms
differentiate between descriptive and inferential statistics
recognize the source of healthcare statistical data
describe users and uses of healthcare statistics
explain the role of the HIM professional in collecting healthcare statistics

  2. EXAMINE the architecture and design of databases
    Assessment Strategies
    Oral, written or graphic assessment
    Criteria
the data dictionary contains the necessary data elements for the given data set
the metadata found in a data dictionary is appropriate for the given data elements (aka fields)
each table has a primary key that uniquely identifies each record
logical relationships between tables are defined through use of appropriate primary and foreign keys

  3. COLLECT data for given data sets
    Assessment Strategies
    Oral, written or graphic assessment
    Criteria
the data elements are appropriate for the stated purpose and given data set
the data characteristics are consistent with their definitions in the data dictionary
data is collected at the appropriate level of granularity
the design supports the accuracy, completeness, and integrity of the data collected (e.g. use of structured data fields)
    the design meets user needs

  4. CONDUCT data mining activities
    Assessment Strategies
    Oral, written or graphic assessment
    Criteria
identify the data elements to be included in the query for the given purpose
identify the source system/database from which the data may be retrieved
use analytic software to query for the necessary data
prepare data for analysis (i.e., remove inaccurate, duplicate, or inconsistent data to ensure quality)

  5. CALCULATE descriptive statistics
    Assessment Strategies
    Oral, written or graphic assessment
    Criteria
    calculate statistics using correct data
    calculate statistics using correct formula
    apply standard rounding principles
    label calculations appropriately

  6. CREATE visualizations to analyze data for patterns and trends
    Assessment Strategies
    Oral, written or graphic assessment
    Criteria
use statistical/analytical tools to create visual representations of the data
select the most appropriate visualization(s) to support accurate interpretation of the data
    organize data
select the most appropriate graph or table for a givenĀ  purpose
include all necessary elements required by the graphical display type
use computerized spreadsheet and/or statistical software to calculate and display data

  7. REPORT results of data analysis
    Assessment Strategies
    Oral, written or graphic assessment
    Criteria
the interpretation of patterns and trends is logical
the reported results of the analysis address the stated purpose
the report includes visualizations to support the conclusions
the report and visualizations are appropriate for the audience and type of data presented
    the report meets professional standards
apply descriptive statistics to identify relationships in data
draw valid conclusions about the meaning of the data
