Course Information
Description
Explores interventions relative to major physical disability diagnoses seen in OT practice. Evaluation, treatment interventions, , assistive technology and documentation are emphasized relative to the biomechanical, neurodevelopmental and rehabilitative approaches to practice.

  1. Examine the OT service delivery models for physical disabilities
    Assessment Strategies
    through an oral, written or graphic assessment

    you identify areas of practice within OT practice
    you relate the domain of OT to the physical rehab system

    you compare the physical rehab system with educational and family systems

  2. Gather data for the purpose of physical rehab screening and evaluation

    through a case study
    in class discussion
    Criteria
    you identify appropriate screening tools, assessments and checklists for physical rehab practice
    you gather evaluation data in the areas of occupational performance, behaviors and skills within the context of the client
    you assess and monitor vital signs

  3. Administer physical rehab assessments based on patient (client) profile

    in the laboratory with fellow student

    you demonstrate use of standardized and nonstandardized assessment

  4. Implement preparatory activities for occupation-based treatment

  5. Demonstrate documentation skills related to physical disability practice
    Assessment Strategies
    using the forms provided
    in the presentation of conclusions and recommendations
    based on observation of recorded events - data provided from video, case study etc.
    Criteria
    you document treatment goals
    records include accurate and complete data
    records are formatted according to organizational specifications
    records show correct use and spelling of professional/technical terminology
    records include diagrams and charts (when present or needed) that are accurately labeled and or completed
    records are signed and dated
    conclusions and recommendations are logical, accurate, and feasible
    you articulate the role of the OTA in discharge planning

  6. Demonstrate physical disability interventions related to biomechanical approach
    Assessment Strategies
    with a case study using biomechanical approach
    through written, oral or graphic assessment
    in lab with fellow students
    Criteria
    you demonstrate skills such as: range of motion, therapeutic exercise, joint mobilization, myofacial release, kinesiotaping
    you demonstrate skills of edema and pain management
    you analyze the use of orthotic devices appropriate to the biomechanical treatment approach
    you demonstrate interventions related to orthopedic conditions such as: amputee, arthritis, burns, cumulative trauma disorder, fractures, hand injury, hip, knee, peripheral nerve injury, prosthetics etc.
    you demonstrate treatment interventions and appropriate use of assistive technologies relative to occupational performance, behaviors and skills such as ADL, IADL
    you adapt environments for an individual’s optimal occupational performance

  7. Demonstrate physical disability interventions related to motor learning/motor control approaches
    Assessment Strategies
    with a case study using the motor learning/motor control approach
    through written, oral or graphic assessment
    in lab with fellow students
    Criteria
    you demonstrate skills such as: inhibition and facilitation techniques, positioning, etc.
    you demonstrate skills of edema and pain management
    you analyze the use of orthotic devices appropriate to motor learning/motor control approaches
    you demonstrate interventions related to neurological conditions such as: cerebrovascular accident, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, Parkinson disease, multiple sclerosis etc.
    you demonstrate treatment interventions and appropriate use of assistive technologies relative to occupational performance, behaviors and skills such as ADL, IADL
    you adapt environments for an individual’s optimal occupational performance

  8. Demonstrate physical disability interventions related to rehabilitative approach
    Assessment Strategies
    with a case study using rehabilitative approach
    through written, oral or graphic assessment
    in lab with fellow students
    Criteria
    you demonstrate skills such as: ADL, IADL, transfers, positioning, mobility
    you use compensatory strategies to facilitate participation in occupation
    you analyze the use of adaptive equipment appropriate to the rehabilitative treatment approach
    you demonstrate interventions and appropriate use of assistive technologies related to rehabilitative approach such as: home assessment, home management, community reintegration
    you complete documentation such as:Functional Index Measure (FIM), checklists, evaluation, home assessment, progress notes
    you adapt environments for an individual’s optimal occupational performance

  9. Demonstrate physical disability interventions related to functional cognition
    Assessment Strategies
    through written, oral or graphic assessment
    in lab with fellow students
    Criteria
    you plan intervention relative to the results of a cognitive assessment
    you select activities and appropriate assistive technologies relative to the level of the client's processing and communication skills
    you recognize safety issues related to cognitive limitations
    you adapt environments for an individual’s optimal occupational performance

  10. Demonstrate physical disability interventions related to visual/perceptual skills
    Assessment Strategies
    through written, oral or graphic assessment
    in lab with fellow students
    Criteria
    you plan intervention relative to the results of a visual perceptual assessment
    you select activities and appropriate assistive technologies relative to the level of the client's sensiomotor and communication skills
    you recognize the safety issues related to visual perceptual limitations
    you adapt environments for an individual’s optimal occupational performance

  11. Fabricate an orthotic device
    Assessment Strategies
    through written, oral or graphic assessment
    in lab with fellow students
    by constructing a minimum of one orthotic device
    Criteria
    you demonstrate principles of splinting
    you create or adapt a splint pattern
    you fabricate a splint
    you assess fit
    you adapt the splint
    you recommend splinting supplies, vendors and resources according to the client's needs (prefabricated splints)

  12. Use ergonomic principles to modify environments and processes
