Description
Examines the role of the OTA in the service delivery to individuals affected by mental health conditions. Provides opportunity for development of skills related to psychosocial assessment and interventions.

Course Competencies
  1. Examine the service delivery models for OT within mental health
    Assessment Strategies
    through an oral, written or graphic assessment
    by locating local community resources available for mental health delivery
    Criteria
    you use terminology consistent with service delivery models
    you articulate differences and similarities between practice settings/systems
    you evaluate contextual factors such as culture, economics, and ethnic background in mental health care delivery
    you describe the OTA scope of practice (including advocate, educator, supervisor, etc.)
    you examine the role of the OTA within the health care team
    you articulate the unique nature of OT within psychosocial practice
    you examine legislative issues and care provider concerns related to psychosocial systems

  2. Administer mental health assessments based on patient (client) profile as appropriate to the OTA role

    in practice labs with video, printed case histories

  3. Perform assessments and selected activities related to communication/interaction skills

    you verbalize an explanation of the process as you perform it
    you select appropriate activity with attention to social and cultural contexts

  4. Evaluate the impact of mental health conditions on occupational performance
    Assessment Strategies
    through a reflection via oral, written, graphic presentation
    Criteria
    you examine context as it relates to psychosocial practice areas (for example, culture, spiritual, etc.)
    you analyze issues related to diverse groups
    you differentiate symptomatology across the lifespan
    you examine performance (areas, skills and patterns) for a variety of diagnoses as they relate to psychosocial practice areas
    you apply the psychosocial OT frames of reference to appropriate settings and populations

  5. Use safety precautions and procedures for OT mental health processes
    Assessment Strategies
    through an oral, written, graphic presentation
    through lab participation
    Criteria
    you demonstrate basic personal safety skills for a variety of psychosocial practice areas (sharps, etc.)
    you demonstrate active listening, verbal support, and de-escalation techniques
    you interpret nonverbal behaviors
    you demonstrate crisis intervention techniques
    you demonstrate knowledge of state regulations and laws
    you articulate the importance of patient rights and facility policies in psychosocial practice
    you verbally demonstrate setting and enforcing clear and consistent limits

  6. Identify effects, side effects and precautions for psychotropic medications
    Assessment Strategies
    by identifying and describing psychotropic medication and their side effects
    through oral, written, graphic presentation
    Criteria
    you demonstrate a basic understanding of psychotropic medications and somatic treatments, and their side effects
    you identify medications that are effective for treatment of diagnostic categories
    you describe accommodations for medication side effects

  7. Demonstrate application of therapeutic techniques

    through classroom discussion

    through lab participation
    Criteria
    you demonstrate therapeutic use of self
    you adapt the approach to the individual, with attention to cultural issues
    you adapt the environment to enhance success

  8. Develop an intervention plan related to psychosocial frames of reference, models, or theories

    by identifying interventions related to a variety of psychosocial diagnoses

    by developing an intervention plan for a designated diagnosis(ses)

    plan includes therapeutic approach

    plan includes goals/interventions relevant to the diagnosis, context, expected function and frame of reference identified

  9. Demonstrate documentation skills related to psychosocial practice
    Assessment Strategies
    through completion of documentation tasks using case study, video, observations or other means
    through oral, written, graphic performance
    Criteria
    you explore documentation in different practice settings
    you complete screens, checklists, standardized formats for the psychosocial population
    you utilize Practice Framework terminology
    you utilize medical and practice specific terminology and abbreviations
    you formulate measurable goals
    you document according to specific type and format (progress note, SOAP, etc.)
