Description
Provides a transition from the academic to the clinical setting. Learners integrate the surgical technologist skills as they apply to various surgical procedures.

Course Competencies
  1. Demonstrate the assembly, care, and utilization of specialized surgical equipment and supplies with continuous guidance

    by answering questions that require you to apply knowledge about this competency (Your instructor may require several written exams as part of this course. You will be notified in advance.)

  2. Integrate principles of surgical conscience for various surgical procedures

  4. Perform preoperative case management for various surgical procedures with continuous guidance

  8. Assist with nonsterile duties for various surgical procedures with continuous guidance

    you check the patient's identification
    you help move the patient onto the OR bed
    you participate in operation site identification during "time out" as defined by facility
    you assist anesthesiologist as needed
    you assist with positioning the patient
    you assist with skin preparation following facility guidelines
    you assist with attaching cautery, suction and other equipment as needed
    you pay attention to the progress of the procedure
    you respond to requests from the sterile team as appropriate
    you respond to emergencies as they present themselves
    you assist with securing dressings at end of procedure
    you assist with moving the patient to the recovery cart
