Description
Expanded Functions Dental Auxiliary students apply skills developed in Preventative Procedures, Restorative Procedures and Prosthodontic Procedures in a clinical setting with patients under the direct supervision of a dentist.

  2. Maintain clear field of vision including isolation techniques

    select and utilize the correct armamentarium
    position yourself and patient correctly to maintain proper ergonomics
    anticipate procedural steps
    perform all steps in an appropriate sequence
    retract the tongue, cheeks and lips using mouth mirror, HVE tip, isolation aides, or adjunctive mechanisms
    evacuate fluids and debris using HVE and/or saliva ejector
    identify the structures of the oral cavity
    isolate oral cavity
    remove the isolation materials
    employ safety precautions
    maintain infection control protocol
    don personal protective equipment
    prepare patient with protective equipment

  3. Perform preventative procedures

    Criteria
    review medical history
    select the correct armamentarium for dental sealants, coronal polishing and fluoride application
    retract the tongue, cheeks and lips using finger, mouth mirror and/or HVE tip
    evacuate fluids and debris using HVE and saliva ejector
    isolate oral cavity using cotton rolls, dental dam or other absorbent aids (ex. dry-angles)
    employ safety precautions
    utilize infection control protocol
    don personal protective equipment
    place appropriate dental sealant
    complete a full mouth coronal polish
    apply appropriate fluoride or similar dental topical agent
    provide pre and post operative instructions to patient
    document procedure on patient record

  4. Perform restorative procedures

    Criteria
    review medical history
    select the correct armamentarium for amalgam, composite/resin, glass ionomer, temporary restorations, and temporary crowns
    retract the tongue, cheeks and lips using finger, mouth mirror and/or HVE tip
    suction fluids and debris using HVE and saliva ejector
    isolate oral cavity using cotton rolls, dental dam or other absorbent aids (ex. dry-angles)
    employ safety precautions
    utilize infection control protocol
    don personal protective equipment
    place, carve, and finish class I, II, and V amalgam restoration on permanent and/or primary teeth
    place, cure, and finish  class I, II, III,  IV, and V composite/resin restoration on permanent and/or primary teeth
    place, cure, and finish glass ionomer restoration on permanent and/or primary teeth
    place and finish temporary restoration on permanent and/or primary teeth
    select, fit and place temporary crown on permanent and/or primary teeth
    provide pre and post operative instructions to patient
    document procedure on patient record

  5. Perform prosthodontic procedures

    Criteria
    review medical history
    select the correct armamentarium
    retract the tongue, cheeks and lips using finger, mouth mirror and/or HVE tip
    evacuate fluids and debris using HVE and saliva ejector

    perform adjustments on oral appliances
    demonstrate removal of sutures from the oral cavity
    produce detailed oral impressions using a variety of materials and/or techniques
    provide pre and post operative instructions to patient
    document procedure on patient record
