Course Information
Description
This course is designed to introduce students to a wide variety of health careers. The nature and scope of the profession including the educational and physical requirements, as well as personal characteristics of each career are discussed. The healthcare system with a historical perspective is presented. The students are introduced to ethical, legal, and safety considerations in healthcare. The student will investigate career security strategies and tools.

  1. Examine strengths and weaknesses in relation to career choices.
    Assessment Strategies
    Use multiple surveys.
    Complete a written paper.
    Criteria
    Record the results of the surveys on form provided.
    Review strengths and weaknesses of each survey.
    Analyze strengths and weaknesses of each survey in a written paper.
    Include alll the information in a personal career portfolio.

  2. Discover the skills required, opportunities available, and the income and benefits for various career choices.
    Assessment Strategies
    Complete a chart for each career choice.
    Orally compare choices utilizing data collected.
    Criteria
    Categorize the following: skills required, job outlook, salary range and benefits on a chart provided.
    Contrast job choices in a discussion with a partner.
    Determine the top two of three choices based on data and discussion.
    Include all the information on a personal career portfolio.

  3. Develop a personal timeline that outlines your educational plans.
    Assessment Strategies
    Construct educational timline for top two career choices.
    Make an appointment with an advisor to discuss timeline.
    Criteria
    Create educational timeline for the duration of the top two chosen programs to include educational semesters.
    Include supplemental instruction in educational timeline.
    Develop a monthly calendar for the first semester of your educational timeline for the top career choice that includes coursework, work, recreation, relaxation and sleep.
    Devise a brief summary of your realistic educational plan to be shared with an advisor.
    Include all the information in a personal career portfolio.

  4. Explain health program options at Madison College.
    Assessment Strategies
    Deliver a PowerPoint presentation.
    Criteria
    Include your top two career choices in your PPT presentation.
    Include program prerequisites, program outline, description of career responsibilities and career outlook and salary in your PPT presentation.
    Maintain eye contact.
    Speak at an appropriate volume.
    Give an extemporaneous speech.
    Include all the information in a personal career portfolio.

  5. Discover the benefits of the resources and services at the Truax Campus and in the health building.
    Assessment Strategies
    Complete a scavenger hunt.
    Criteria
    Locate essential resources and services at Truax and in the health building.
    Define the programs and resources within Truax and the health building.
    Describe the benefits of using the resources and services that you have located.

  6. Develop a relationship with an advisor you will work with in the future.
    Assessment Strategies
    Layout an educational plan with an advisor.
    Criteria
    Attend a meeting with an advisor.
    Outline an educational plan on a form provided.
