Course Information
Description
This course will provide an overview of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations as they relate to the inspection, repair, and maintenance of commercial motor vehicles.  Students will inspect commercial motor vehicles and complete inspection documentation according to the Code of Federal Regulations Title 49, Parts 393, and Appendix A to Part 396.

    Criteria
    Wear steel-toed shoes, safety glasses, long sleeved top, uniform type pants or jeans
    Clothing is not loose or ripped
    Jewelry does not interfere with shop tasks
    Hair is tied back to prevent accident with moving equipment
    Clear shop area for safely raising and supporting vehicle or equipment
    Identify safety items and hazards

  5. Perform a Periodic Inspection
    Assessment Strategies
    by performing an inspection
    by submitting completed DOT Annual Vehicle Inspection Report
    by submitting a list of Out-of-Service violations
    by submitting a completed repair order
    Criteria
    you select the proper tools and equipment
    you follow all personal and environmental safety practices
    you explain DOT out of service criteria
    you meet DOT and industry standards for performing vehicle DOT inspections
    inspection form includes the date, fleet number, motor carrier operator, address, city, state, zip code, vehicle type, inspector's name, a vehicle identification
    inspection form includes checked brake system (including all components)
    inspection form includes checked coupling devices (including all components)
    inspection form includes checked exhaust system (including all components)
    inspection form includes checked fuel system (including all components)
    inspection form includes checked lighting devices (including all components)
    inspection form includes checked safe loading (including all components)
    inspection form includes checked steering mechanism (including all components)
    inspection form includes checked suspension (including all components)

    List of Out-of-Service violations includes items according to inspection criteria
    you complete the initial identification information
    you inspect the engine compartment fluids
    you inspect the engine intake system
    you inspect the engine belts
    you inspect the steering system
    you measure the applied brake stroke on the forward drive axle
    you inspect for air brake system air leaks
    you inspect for entire vehicle fluid leaks
    you inspect the vehicle lighting system (omitting reverse light)
    you inspect the tire and wheel assemblies
    your inspection form is neat and legible (zero points will be given for  answers that cannot be read
    you indicate YES or NO if needed repairs are an Appendix G criteria violation and site the specific criteria  statement(5pts/area)
    you complete the entire inspection with no safety violations

  6. Complete a Periodic Inspection report
