Course Information
Description
Lectures and labs teach students to maintain, service, and repair diesel engines and engine support systems. Precision measuring, failure analysis, and parts inspection will also be included in this course.

Course Competencies
  1. Perform a tool box inventory
    Assessment Strategies
    completing a tool box inventory using the "MATC Diesel Shop 30A Tool box Inventory" checklist at the beginning of the semester
    completing a "Missing Tool List" form at the beginning of the semester

    Criteria
    you completed the checklist to include an "X" next to items that are accounted for in the tool box
    you completed the "Missing Tool List" listing the name and description of the missing item(s)
    you have your missing item(s) replenished by your instructor
    you and your partner agree to the terms listed on the last page of the "MATC Diesel Shop 30A Tool box Inventory" with your signature and the date the inventory was completed.
    you and your partner have the instructor sign the inventory sheets and one copy is retained by the instructor the other copy is retained by you.

  2. Work safely and follow recommended procedures associated with a diesel shop environment when working with diesel powered equipment, engines and tooling
    Assessment Strategies
    reading and signing the appropriate safety form handed out the first day of class
    attending the diesel department student orientation and signing the form
    properly wearing all your personal and environmental safety equipment
    following all safety procedures set forth by OSHA, the manufacture, your instructor and the college

    recognizing unsafe working conditions and correct those conditions to make them safe
    working safe around a diesel engine, a piece of equipment, or diesel engine components

  3. Remove engine from chassis and/or engine stand, disassemble into subsystems and properly clean and protect components for inspection

  4. Diagnose failed engine and/or components to determine the repair needed to correct the root cause of the problem
