Course Information
Description
Prepares the learner with the basic knowledge of design, construction, and operating principles of the diesel engine. Service, maintenance, and the types of repairs made on diesel engines and diesel engine support systems will be the major emphasis of the course

Course Competencies
  1. Work safely and follow reccommended procedures associated with a diesel shop environment when working with diesel powered equipment, engines and tooling
    Assessment Strategies
    reading and signing the appropriate safety form handed out the first day of class
    attending the diesel department student orientation and signing the form
    properly wearing all your personal and environmental safety equipment
    following all safety procedures set forth by OSHA, the manufacture, your instructor and the college
    following the proper operational procedures of all tooling and equipment found in a diesel shop environment
    recognizing unsafe working conditions and correct those conditions to make them safe
    working safe around a diesel engine, a piece of equipment, or diesel engine components

  2. Demonstrate a safe, clean and organized work environment while working with diesel engines and diesel powered equipment

    preforming proper handling, cleaning and organization of your engine parts
    properly usuing the appropriate containers, carts and stands
    properly using the appropriate supplies

  3. Determine the operation, theory and fundamentals of diesel powered engines

    you identified parts and components for both 2 stroke and 4 stroke cycle diesel engines

    you explained the difference between 2-stroke- and 4-stroke-cycle diesel engine theory of operation

    you can pass the written examinations

  4. Recognize terms and formulas associated with diesel engines
    Assessment Strategies
    reviewing a power point presentation or lecture and and answering questions
    reading the assigned chapters in the text book and completing the selected review questions
    using formulas and calculating the answers to horsepower, torque, brake mean effective pressure, thermal efficiency, volumetric efficiency, mechanical efficiency, work, power, and energy of diesel engine using the reference material and formulas provided

  5. Determine specific engine information

    selecting the appropriate OEM literature and determine engine cylinder arrangement, firing order, rotation, timing, horsepower, torque, displacement, bore size, stroke and RPM's for specific engines
    completing the Engine Information, Specification and Parts section of the Diesel Engine Overhaul Workbook
    completing the appropriate workorder and part sheets
    completing the written examinations
    Criteria
    you answered correctly the presentation and chapter review questions

  6. Explain the different types of combustion systems, and parts, used on diesel powered engines

    completing research on one of the five combustion system topics, that will be handed out in class.
    submitting for grade, a 3 page report on your research
    completing a a minimum 20 minute classroom presentation to your peers on your topic
    answering questions about your topic from your peers and instructor
    creating handouts to justify your research and give to your peers
    completing a written examination

  7. Determine the operation and theory of diesel engine support systems

    testing the function of the different diesel engine support systems and comparing to OEM specifications

  8. Determine the OEM rebuilt engine break-in procedure and preform engine maintenance for the engine break-in

    completing the Engine Dynamometer Testing section of your Diesel Engines Overhaul Workbook
    recorded and printing off your engines dynamometer performance printout

    you used the appropriate OEM literature and/or software to determine OEM diesel engine break-in procedure
    you used the appropriate OEM literature and/or software to determine OEM specifications for horsepower, torque, RPM, oil pressure, boost pressure, coolant temperature intake manifold temperature, and fuel pressure and temperature and unusual smoke
    you properly pre-lubed and primed your engine and repaired any leaks
    you verified the condition and levels of all fluids and repaired any leaks
    you successfully ran your engine without any noises, vibrations, diagnostic codes or leaks and your engine meets all engine specifications within +/- 3%
    you completed the Engine Dynamometer Testing section of your Deisel Engines Overhaul Workbook and turned in the performance printout
    you have completing and turned in the appropriate workorder and part sheets
    you can pass the written examination
