Description
This course will provide the opportunity to perform preventive maintenance inspections and conduct minor repairs on heavy-duty trucks and equipment.

    Criteria
    Frame and Chassis Inspection includes air brake inspection (including all components)
    you chock the wheels that will remain on the ground
    you properly cage the brake chamber
    you safely raise and support the vehicle axle on jackstands
    you perform the correct procedure for removing the wheels
    you remove the axle nuts, lockwashers, or split cones, and axle
    you remove the bearing locknut, lockwasher, and adjusting nut
    you perform the correct procedure for removing the wheel hub
    you remove the old oil seal with the proper puller
    you perform an inspection of the parts (to include the wheel hub seal bore, bearings[cones], races[cups], seal lip contact surface on spindle, spindle threads
    you clean all parts being returned to service
    you value "cleanliness" next to "godliness"
    you obtain new wheel seal and read the directions for installation
    you prelube and install inner wheel bearing
    you select the proper tools for seal installation
    you follow the proper procedure for seal installation
    you fill hub cavity with clean oil prior to installation
    you use caution when installing hub assembly to prevent damage to new seal
    you install outer bearing and adjusting nut
    you follow proper procedure for adjustment and torque of wheel bearing hardware

  5. Perform inspections and maintenance on coupling devices

    Criteria
    you identify the different types of fifth wheels and explain their use

    you inspect all fifth wheel parts for reuseability

    you check the fifth wheel operation/adjustment using a lock tester
    you adjust the fifth wheel locking mechanism if needed (Instructor's permission is needed PRIOR to performing this step)

    You apply CLEAN engine oil to the new oil filter gasket
    You install the new oil filter(s) and tighten until the filter gasket contacts the base
    You tighten the oil filter by hand according to the instructions that are shown on the filter
    You do NOT overtighten the oil filter
    You label the filter with date and current odometer or hourmeter reading for future reference
    You clean and remove the oil filler cap
    You fill the crankcase with the proper amount of oil according to the manufacturer operation and maintenance manual
    You crank the engine at no longer than 30 second intervals to fill all filters before starting
    You start and run the engine at "LOW IDLE" for two minutes to ensure the lubrication system has oil and that the filters are full.
    You inspect the oil drain plug and filter(s) for oil leaks.
    You stop the engine and allow the oil to drain back to the sump for a minimum of 10 minutes
    You dispose of all used waste oil and filters according to local regulations
    You clean and return all tools to their respective areas
    You print legibly in ALL necessary components of oil sample label
    You remove the oil level gauge in order to check the oil level
    You adjust the oil level to maintain the level between the "ADD" and "FULL" marks on the oil level gauge
    You complete a "NEXT SERVICE DUE" notification and apply to vehicle
    You complete a work order and list of needed repairs
    You select the proper tools and equipment
    You follow all personal and environmental safety practices
