Introduction to shop procedures, safety practices, tools, equipment, and vehicles commonly found in a diesel and heavy equipment facility. Learn about the process for obtaining a Wisconsin Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). Conducted in a shop environment.

Course Competencies
  1. Demonstrate safe work habits while in a shop environment
    Assessment Strategies
    Skill demonstration in shop
    Criteria
    Wear steel-toed shoes, safety glasses, long sleeved top, uniform type pants or jeans
    Clothing is not loose or ripped
    Jewelry does not interfere with shop tasks
    Hair is tied back to prevent accident with moving equipment
    Clear shop area for safely raising and supporting vehicle or equipment
    Identify safety items and hazards

  2. Examine the process for obtaining a Wisconsin Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)
    Assessment Strategies
    Test
    Criteria
    Rationalize the need for a CDL within this occupation
    Travel to Wisconsin Department of Motor Vehicles for complete the test
    Pass all three DMV tests within the state guidelines of 80% or higher (general knowledge, air brakes, combination vehicle)

  3. Follow Standard Operating Procedure for starting a truck or piece of equipment

    Criteria
    Meet performance standards on Assessment Scoring Guide (checklist) for Standard Operating Procedure (assessment 5)
    Perform fluid checks, safety checks, and gauge checks during the starting process of a vehicle

  4. Identify types of fasteners and fittings

    Quiz, Skill demonstration, written product
    Criteria
    Identify of fasteners and fittings to join parts, plumb parts and fluids
    Measure and identify bolts, fittings, and nuts
    Look up torque tightening specifications accurately
    Meet performance standards on Assessment Scoring Guide for fasteners and fittings (assessment 1)

  5. Utilize OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) electronic service and parts information

    Criteria
    Interpret service manuals
    Identify specific service procedures within service and parts manuals
    Items located in the manual correctly identify general information, technical Information and specifications, and parts information
    Meet performance standards on Assessment Scoring Guide for OEM (assessment 2)

  6. Use an oxy-acetylene torch
    Assessment Strategies
    Skill demonstration in shop
    Criteria
    Demonstrate safety while handling torch
    Use torch cart, face shield, gloves, striker, fire extinguisher (if needed)
    Conduct initial checks
    Light and adjust torch
    Shut down the torch
    Roll up torch handle hose and safely hang torch handle on torch cart
