Course Information
Description
This course is an introduction to the fundamental techniques, theories, workflows and software as it relates to 3D modeling for real-time and pre-rendered production. Students will create digital models with an emphasis on topographical density, texture mapping, multi-step processes and asset design. Lectures and projects consist of the various production techniques that explore polygonal modeling and how to prepare constructed models for texturing.

Course Competencies (Course Outcomes)
  1. Produce high quality models and textures which conform to the restrictions of the current real-time platforms
    Assessment Strategies
    Creating models which have appropriate poly counts, appropriate deformation areas, texture map sizes and texture densities which are consistent with current generation real-time platforms.
    Designing custom hard surface assets which are consistent with the aesthetic principles taught in Modeling One.
    Meeting all the technical requirements of a professionally constructed 3D asset for real-time development.  Examples include but are not limited to: All normal are conformed and pointing in the appropriate direction, smooth surfaces not impacted by superfluous vertices, no welded vertices or edges, no inappropriate concave edges and no wasted texture space.
    Criteria
    Professional hard surface models adhere to the target specs of the specific project
    Use design elements and principles when creating custom hard surface assets.
    Hard surface model is error free which imports successfully into the target platform

  2. Employ the hard surface modeling techniques to create the topographical details of a professional 3D asset
    Assessment Strategies
    Demonstrate strong model construction
    Constructing models that will deform properly, maintaining their volumes based on their poly flow.
    Applying the precise modeling tools to create stable and predictable geometry.
    Criteria
    Support all the vertices, edges and faces of a model as not to create duplicate geometry, holes or other degrading artifacts which will break the integrity of the model
    Construct moveable areas of the asset so the volume or shape of the geometry is not compromised when the asset is moving
    Identify the correct modeling tools needed to create complex hard surface models while maintaining the structural integrity of the geometry

  3. Create professional real-time assets using a multi-step process
    Assessment Strategies
    Successfully producing DNS (Diffuse, Normal and Specular) materials for required 3D models.
    Creating the appropriate inputs and output required for specific shader FXs.
    Producing professional quality work at all tangible check-in points within the asset creation pipeline.  Examples include but are not limited to: Thumbnails, Design Sketches, Pre-Textured Models, Textures, Materials and Renders.
    Criteria
    Generate any and all maps/materials required for your projects
    Apply the appropriate shaders to your projects to create the required FXs
    Work is high quality at each stage of the pipeline to create an overall successful project

  4. Apply critical thinking to solve technical 3D modeling issues and problems
    Assessment Strategies
    Trouble shooting issues and problems that arise in their project.
    Developing custom solutions to unique modeling issues and needs.
    Successfully fixing any and all technical issues that arise with their project.
    Criteria
    Diagnose any and all technical issues related to your project
    Develop custom tools and solutions for specific hard surface modeling needs
    Fix any and all technical issues related to your project

  5. Demonstrate the ability to meet deadlines through strong self-management skills
    Assessment Strategies
    Demonstrating the ability to turn in projects on time.
    Outlining the scope and timeline of each project.
    Calculating the resources needed for each project.
    Criteria
    Hard surface models are high quality and produced within the time frame allowed per project
    Calculate the overall scope and working schedule predicated on the final deadline issued by the instructor
    Account for all the resource needs of their specific project

  6. Apply 3D modeling lexicon and processes
    Assessment Strategies
    Employing the modeling concepts and terminology covered in Modeling One in critiques and classroom discussions.
    Diagraming and identifying, through designs, the concepts and principles covered in Modeling One.
    Written exams.
    Criteria
    Use modeling terminology during classroom critiques and discussions
    Sketch and diagram designs that include proper technical modeling terms
