10207103 Basic Drawing for Concepting
Course Information
Description
An introductory drawing course focused on developing the visualization, drawing, and rendering skills used in concept development for animation, games, and digital 3D production. Students explore fundamental principles of perspective, proportion, spatial measurement, line quality, and linear rendering while developing proficiency with digital drawing tools and workflows. Through demonstrations, guided practice, critique, and project-based assignments, students create concept drawings designed to support 3D Art and Animation. Emphasis is placed on replicating real world objects, communicating three-dimensional form, applying digital techniques to improve efficiency, and preparing artwork for translation into 3D.

Course Competencies (Course Outcomes)
  1. Apply digital drawing techniques to create artwork with accurate perspective construction and spatial depth
    Assessment Strategies
    Drawing/Illustration
    Skill Demonstration
    Criteria
Align elements to established vanishing points
Apply vertical line relationships in one- and two-point perspective
Apply horizontal line relationships in one-point perspective
Construct ellipses with accurate degrees and orientation based on perspective
Create the illusion of depth and space through systematic reduction in scale from foreground to background
Maintain proportionally accurate measurements within an established perspective system

  2. Apply digital line quality and line termination techniques to create controlled and intentional linework
    Assessment Strategies
    Drawing/Illustration
    Skill Demonstration
    Criteria
Produce clean, fluid, and controlled linework without shaky or repetitive marks
Apply intentional line-weight variation to define forms and visual hierarchy
Use line weight to reinforce compositional depth, with heavier lines in the foreground and lighter lines in the background
Create natural, expressive linework that maintains a hand-drawn quality within a digital workflow

  3. Apply perspective measurement techniques to construct and duplicate objects in three-dimensional space
    Assessment Strategies
    Drawing/Illustration
    Skill Demonstration
    Criteria
Apply cube division techniques to locate the center of forms in perspective
Duplicate and multiply objects within an established perspective system
Divide objects and spaces while maintaining perspective
Translate real-world measurements and proportions into perspective

  4. Apply digital manipulation techniques to efficiently modify, refine, and enhance artwork
    Assessment Strategies
    Drawing/Illustration
    Skill Demonstration
    Criteria
Apply transform tools to modify and refine digital artwork
Apply filters to support the development and refinement of digital artwork
Use blending modes to achieve intentional visual effects and adjustments
Organize and manage the layer stack to support an efficient and editable digital workflow

  5. Apply two-point perspective principles to construct objects and environments with believable proportion, scale, and spatial depth
    Assessment Strategies
    Drawing/Illustration
    Skill Demonstration
    Criteria
Establish a horizon line and two vanishing points based on the intended viewpoint
Align receding parallel edges to their corresponding vanishing points
Maintain vertical line relationships within two-point perspective constructions
Apply systematic scale reduction as objects and forms recede in space
Maintain proportions and measurements when constructing and duplicating forms in perspective
Construct ellipses and curved forms that conform to the established perspective system
Position multiple objects with consistent spatial relationships, scale, and orientation
Create believable depth and three-dimensional space through consistent application of two-point perspective principles

  6. Demonstrate professional practices consistent with concept art production environments
    Assessment Strategies

Apply feedback to your own work
Use project management strategies to project schedules and deadlines
Organize, name, and submit digital files according to established course and production conventions
Completed artwork in submitted in the required format and resolution appropriate to the assignment

  7. Participate in a peer critique
    Assessment Strategies
Written Product and/or Oral Presentation (feedback on peer work)
    Criteria
Evaluate peer artifact using provided criteria for basis of judgment
Respond to/write feedback to peer in language that is inclusive and respectful
