Course Information
Description
This is an introductory sound production course in which students will learn to create clean, consistent, and intelligible audio recordings within a project driven curriculum. Students will learn sound principles, critical listening skills, and apply digital recording, editing, and mixing techniques to industry standards.

  3. Use audio editing software

    Perform basic editing using software that is equivalent to Adobe Audition
    Create multi-track compositions and apply EQ, compression, and noise reduction
    Navigate through clip and sequence “Round Tripping” techniques with Adobe Audition, Adobe Premiere Pro
    Apply basic audio effects, using the presets and advanced settings for each
    Perform advanced noise-reduction and audio repair using software tools and techniques
    Perform basic motion graphics within the editing software, including simple movement using event markers and timeline
    Export to an assortment of video compressions from Adobe Premiere Pro, using presets
    Convert an assortment of video compressions using Adobe Media Encoder, using presets

  4. Use hardware to produce various audio compositions

    Troubleshoot set-up of external audio recording devices and DAWs (digital audio workstations)
    Explain microphone types, placement techniques, and industry best practices
    Use an external recorder and DAW (Digital Audio Workstation)
    Make manual adjustments to external recorder, computer, and audio interface settings, arm microphone, script writing
    Set input levels, record slates and countdowns
    Choose most effective microphones for an interview, multiple guests, location recording, demonstration, action event
    Demonstrate audio sweetening using tools and effects
    Export following industry standards

  5. Listen critically and effectively

  6. Create SFX and Foley recordings

    Identify SFX procurement best-practices
    Record several examples of SFX in various categories
    Name and index SFX based on category, noun, verb, etc.
    Edit and sweeten SFX using editing software
    Perform Foley SFX recording and capturing to picture

  7. Perform dual-system sound recording and synchronization for videography

    Identify different microphones used for dialog capture and record examples of each
    Perform interviewing techniques for single-person interviews or testimonials
    Synchronize and sweeten video and audio using Premiere Pro software

    Stay within exact 30 and 15-second time constraints

  9. Perform spot editing for video / sound-design

    Round-trip video sound from Adobe Premiere Pro to Audition for editing
    Build soundtrack using Media Browser and Markers within Audition
    Export finished soundtrack back to Premiere Pro as stems or nested sequence
    Use “Edit Original” to return to Audition to continue editing

  10. Produce your professional Commercial VO Demo
    Assessment Strategies
    Project
    Criteria
    Commercial VO Demo consists of 5-8 recorded VO segments (in your voice)
    3-5 samples are produced with SFX, music, ambient FX as necessary
    1-2 samples are voice alone (audiobook)
    Create a visual static identity card for the demo containing a headshot, name, voice description, and other info as needed
