Course Competencies
  1. Explore camera requirements

by obtaining a fully adjustable 35mm camera with changeable shutter speeds and lens apertures
    Criteria
camera allows the proper film speed setting with a light meter
camera allows shutter speeds to be chosen to freeze or blue subject
camera allows the lens aperture to be chosen to control depth-of-field (focus depth)
camera allows the relationship between shutter sped and lens aperture to control exposure

  2. Operate camera controls
    Assessment Strategies
by changing shutter speeds, lens choice and lens aperture
    Criteria
you use fast shutter speeds to freeze the subject while slow shutter speeds blur
you use a normal (50mm) lens to have an average depth of field (DOF) and image perspective (relationship of near and far subjects)
you use a wide angle (24-35mm) lens to have great DOF and a wide perspective
you use a telephoto (85-500mm) lens to have a shallow DOF and a compressed perspective
you use the shutter speed and lens aperture to control film exposure
you use the shutter speed and lens aperture which work inversely
you use a light meter set to the ISO rated film speed for film used

  3. Apply laboratory safety
    Assessment Strategies
    in the photography photo lab
by completing a chemical lab safety quiz
    Criteria
you use splash proof eye protective wear
you use a chemical resistant apron to protect your skin and clothes
you use chemical resistant gloves to protect your skin
you locate Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS)
you report chemical spills to have them properly cleaned and neutralized
you report the development of a chemical sensitivity (skin rash), if noticed to the instructor
you explore the purpose of splash proof eye protective wear
you explore the use of a chemical resistant apron to protect your skin and clothes
you explore the use chemical resistant gloves to protect your skin
you examine the Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS)
you examine how to report a chemical spill so it can be properly cleaned and neutralized
you explore how to report the development of a chemical sensitivity (skin rash), if noticed to the instructor

  4. Perform film processing
    Assessment Strategies
by submitting properly exposed and processed film
    Criteria
    you follow safety procedures
film is loaded on reel to prevent film touches
film is placed in developing tank
you correlate developer temperature with time chart for developing
developer is properly diluted with water
film is cut into strips and placed in negative pages for contact printing
film is of proper density with shadow detail and highlights that are not bullet proof
images on film are sharply focused

  5. Perform contact printing, print processing and enlarging
    Assessment Strategies
by submitting a properly exposed and processed contact sheet
by submitting a properly exposed and processed enlargement
    Criteria
contact sheet shows proper range of contrast (shadow to highlight)
contact sheet is evenly exposed and processed
contact sheet includes all negatives on a film
enlargement is evenly exposed and processed
enlargement shows a minimum of dust spots
    enlargement shows proper contrast range

  6. Perform mounting/spotting
    Assessment Strategies
by submitting a properly drymounted print on mount board with no visible dust spots
    Criteria
print is properly aligned (placed) on clean mount board
print is fully adhered to mount board
spotting technique matches the dye tone to gray area surrounding dust spot

  7. Explore composition
    Assessment Strategies
by submitting a well composed photograph with subject NOT dead- centered
    Criteria
image does not use focusing ring to center subject in camera frame
photograph is composed using rule of thirds
photograph draws viewer's eye into important part of photograph
extraneous objects are cropped out of the photograph

  8. Explore depth of field
    Assessment Strategies
by submitting a print that includes a depth-of-field controls focus of the subject(s)
    Criteria
lens is set to small aperture to create great wide DOF
lens is set to large aperture to create shallow DOF
depth of field preview button is used to check that key parts of the composition are in focus or not depending on intention

  9. Apply print controls
    Assessment Strategies
by submitting a print that shows proper contrast between highlights and shadows and good enlarging and processing technique
    Criteria
print is made with proper contrast filter so detail is seen in both shadows and highlights
print is evenly exposed and processed
print shows a minimum of dust spots and film scratches
print is properly fixed and washed to prevent chemical staining

  10. Manipulate motion with a camera
    Assessment Strategies
By submitting a print that demonstrates the use of different shutter speeds, keeping the camera still or moving the camera to follow subject (panning)
    Criteria
subject is frozen in time with fast shutter speed
subject is partially blurred with medium shutter speed
subject is totally blurred with slow shutter speed
subject is mostly sharp but background blurred with camera panning

  11. Perform flash photography
    Assessment Strategies
By submitting a print that demonstrates using an electronic flash unit in low (or no) light or in high contrast scenes
    Criteria
print image of subject in motion is frozen by the flash
print image of subject in low (or no) light has proper detail and contrast
print image of subject in high contrast scene has proper detail and contrast in areas of deepest shadow

  12. Explore available (low) light without flash
    Assessment Strategies
by submitting a print that demonstrates the holding of the camera steady or the use of a tripod or other non-movable surface

moving subject is blurred while background is frozen
moving subject is sharp while background is blurred
night scenes has low contrast and darker tones
print has feeling of darkness, night and mystery

  13. Perform advanced darkroom techniques
    Assessment Strategies
by submitting a print that has even exposure by burning-in light areas and dodging back dark areas
