Course Competencies
-
Explore camera requirementsAssessment Strategiesby obtaining a fully adjustable 35mm camera with changeable shutter speeds and lens aperturesCriteriacamera allows the proper film speed setting with a light metercamera allows shutter speeds to be chosen to freeze or blue subjectcamera allows the lens aperture to be chosen to control depth-of-field (focus depth)camera allows the relationship between shutter sped and lens aperture to control exposure
-
Operate camera controlsAssessment Strategiesby changing shutter speeds, lens choice and lens apertureCriteriayou use fast shutter speeds to freeze the subject while slow shutter speeds bluryou use a normal (50mm) lens to have an average depth of field (DOF) and image perspective (relationship of near and far subjects)you use a wide angle (24-35mm) lens to have great DOF and a wide perspectiveyou use a telephoto (85-500mm) lens to have a shallow DOF and a compressed perspectiveyou use the shutter speed and lens aperture to control film exposureyou use the shutter speed and lens aperture which work inverselyyou use a light meter set to the ISO rated film speed for film used
-
Apply laboratory safetyAssessment Strategiesin the photography photo labby completing a chemical lab safety quizCriteriayou use splash proof eye protective wearyou use a chemical resistant apron to protect your skin and clothesyou use chemical resistant gloves to protect your skinyou locate Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS)you report chemical spills to have them properly cleaned and neutralizedyou report the development of a chemical sensitivity (skin rash), if noticed to the instructoryou explore the purpose of splash proof eye protective wearyou explore the use of a chemical resistant apron to protect your skin and clothesyou explore the use chemical resistant gloves to protect your skinyou examine the Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS)you examine how to report a chemical spill so it can be properly cleaned and neutralizedyou explore how to report the development of a chemical sensitivity (skin rash), if noticed to the instructor
-
Perform film processingAssessment Strategiesby submitting properly exposed and processed filmCriteriayou follow safety proceduresfilm is loaded on reel to prevent film touchesfilm is placed in developing tankyou correlate developer temperature with time chart for developingdeveloper is properly diluted with waterfilm is cut into strips and placed in negative pages for contact printingfilm is of proper density with shadow detail and highlights that are not bullet proofimages on film are sharply focused
-
Perform contact printing, print processing and enlargingAssessment Strategiesby submitting a properly exposed and processed contact sheetby submitting a properly exposed and processed enlargementCriteriacontact sheet shows proper range of contrast (shadow to highlight)contact sheet is evenly exposed and processedcontact sheet includes all negatives on a filmenlargement is evenly exposed and processedenlargement shows a minimum of dust spotsenlargement shows proper contrast range
-
Perform mounting/spottingAssessment Strategiesby submitting a properly drymounted print on mount board with no visible dust spotsCriteriaprint is properly aligned (placed) on clean mount boardprint is fully adhered to mount boardspotting technique matches the dye tone to gray area surrounding dust spot
-
Explore compositionAssessment Strategiesby submitting a well composed photograph with subject NOT dead- centeredCriteriaimage does not use focusing ring to center subject in camera framephotograph is composed using rule of thirdsphotograph draws viewer's eye into important part of photographextraneous objects are cropped out of the photograph
-
Explore depth of fieldAssessment Strategiesby submitting a print that includes a depth-of-field controls focus of the subject(s)Criterialens is set to small aperture to create great wide DOFlens is set to large aperture to create shallow DOFdepth of field preview button is used to check that key parts of the composition are in focus or not depending on intention
-
Apply print controlsAssessment Strategiesby submitting a print that shows proper contrast between highlights and shadows and good enlarging and processing techniqueCriteriaprint is made with proper contrast filter so detail is seen in both shadows and highlightsprint is evenly exposed and processedprint shows a minimum of dust spots and film scratchesprint is properly fixed and washed to prevent chemical staining
-
Manipulate motion with a cameraAssessment StrategiesBy submitting a print that demonstrates the use of different shutter speeds, keeping the camera still or moving the camera to follow subject (panning)Criteriasubject is frozen in time with fast shutter speedsubject is partially blurred with medium shutter speedsubject is totally blurred with slow shutter speedsubject is mostly sharp but background blurred with camera panning
-
Perform flash photographyAssessment StrategiesBy submitting a print that demonstrates using an electronic flash unit in low (or no) light or in high contrast scenesCriteriaprint image of subject in motion is frozen by the flashprint image of subject in low (or no) light has proper detail and contrastprint image of subject in high contrast scene has proper detail and contrast in areas of deepest shadow
-
Explore available (low) light without flashAssessment Strategiesby submitting a print that demonstrates the holding of the camera steady or the use of a tripod or other non-movable surfaceCriteriamoving subject is blurred while background is frozenmoving subject is sharp while background is blurrednight scenes has low contrast and darker tonesprint has feeling of darkness, night and mystery
-
Perform advanced darkroom techniquesAssessment Strategiesby submitting a print that has even exposure by burning-in light areas and dodging back dark areasCriteriaprint highlight areas have some detail and are not blank whiteprint shadow areas have some detail and are not all blackprint shows no obvious signs of exposure manipulation by constantly moving dodging or burning-in tools during exposure
-
Perform portraiture photographyAssessment Strategiesby submitting a photograph of a person or people unposed for the cameraCriteriaprint depicts subject(s) in natural settings unaware of cameraprint tells a story about what the subject is doingprint tells a story about the subject's life or personality
-
Use filters in black and white photographyAssessment Strategiesby submitting a print of a subject photographed with different colored filtersCriteriaprint depicts color tonalities as seen by viewer with yellow filter (e.g. white clouds against blue sky)print depicts more dramatic contrast with orange filter (e.g.white clouds against dark blue sky)print depicts extreme contrast with red filter (e.g. stormy, white clouds against dramatically black sky)print depicts variable contrast with manipulation of polarizing filter (rotating filter will change image contrast)print depicts variable contrast with manipulation of polarizing filter (rotating filter will change image contrast)
