Course Information
Description
Basic introduction to additive and subtractive color theory using digital color principles. Digital image capture, manipulation and output will be covered, along with basic color management principles and techniques.

  1. Demonstrate light-based color mixing (RGB)

    Criteria
    Identify the primary colors (red, green, blue) of a digital image file in Photoshop by using Level Adjustment
    Use Additive mixing with Photoshop’s Level Adjustment
    Start with darkness (black) and adds light to create color
    Image is color adjusted effectively
    Identify the RGB system in photography (screens, digital displays, stage lighting)

  2. Adjust a print image using a pigment-based color mixing process (CMYK)
    Assessment Strategies
    Written Product, Print
    Criteria
    Identify pigments, dyes, and inks
    Use Photoshop adjustment layer to correct color, brightness, and/or darkness of image
    Print is adjusted to match the original screen image
    Print is saved as a separate file

  3. Use current image editing techniques in Adobe Photoshop

    Criteria
    Adapt to new features in Photoshop
    Manipulate color with Curves
    Change color with Hue/Saturation
    Adjust color with Vibrance
    Adjust at least three images

  7. Apply studio strobe lighting techniques to subjects: adding primary colors (RGB)

    Images are of the same subject
    Red color gel is added to front of strobe / light source
    Green color gel is added to front of strobe / light source

  8. Apply studio strobe lighting techniques to a portrait: mix 2-3 colors

    Criteria
    Use supplied studio strobe system
    Use a backdrop
    Image is a portrait of a person
    Image shows effective use of a two to three color mix
    Project two to three colors onto same subject
    Subject is illuminated with two to three colors

  9. Explore color harmony and the psychology of color

    Criteria
    Explain common color meanings with their emotional or psychological reactions
    Subject is a combination of your choice
    Use complimentary color that work together in harmony
    Use contrasting colors
    Differentiate warm and cool colors
    Critique response identifies warm and cool colors
    Critique response identifies your emotional or psychological reactions such as energy, elegance, calm
    Respond (verbal) to presented colors during critique

  10. Produce a six-print portfolio of your work with a variety of print sizes

    Project: Six Small Prints, One Large Print Portfolio, Presentation
    Criteria
    Select your best six prints
    Use the small and large format inkjet printer
    Use the Lightroom print modules (make a print, organize, process)
    Settings have been applied effectively to prints
    Compare saturation of different photo papers
    Profile is applied to images effectively
    Presentation includes a display of portfolio images
    Verbal presentation includes intention of each image
    Verbal presentation includes description of colors and if they match intention

  11. Prepare files for use online

    Select 10 of your images
    Resize images in order for effective upload
    Image pixel-based resolution quality is maintained
    Determine file format
    Image size and resolution match intended display proportions
    Use Lightroom or Photoshop
    Crop Tool is used effectively
    Save and export images using a batch process

  12. Participate in a peer / group critique

    Written product and/or oral presentation (feedback on peer work)
    Criteria
    Evaluate peer artifact using provided criteria for basis of judgment
    Respond to/write feedback to peer in language that is inclusive and respectful
