Course Information
Description
A first-semester course, provides the cornerstone for concurrent and future photography and video production courses. Become familiar with the characteristics and qualities of light. Acquire specific skills in hard and soft light; lighting direction; incident and reflective exposure determination; lighting for shape and texture; lighting glassware; lighting reflective subjects; basic lighting for simple portraiture; and operation of professional lighting equipment in the studio.

  1. Demonstrate effects of F-Stop on depth of field
    Assessment Strategies

    Criteria
    Images are of the same subject
    Images are of equal exposure using different F-Stops and shutter speed
    Images display different depth of field
    Both images hold focus on the subject; one with the background in focus and one with it out of focus

  2. Show the effects of shutter speed on your composition

    Criteria
    Image subject is moving
    One image displays a stopping action
    One image displays a blurred action while subject is moving

  3. Use a hand held exposure meter
    Assessment Strategies
    Skill demonstration in studio
    Criteria
    Meter is positioned effectively on different subjects
    Meter is positioned in front of a subject pointed toward camera or light source
    Toggle between different metering modes
    Follow the recommended sequence to measure and read the initial exposure
    Verbally communicate the correct exposure after taking the initial meter reading

  4. Demonstrate tethered shooting using capture software and Adobe Lightroom Classic software
    Assessment Strategies
    Skill demonstration in studio
    Five images with star rating
    Criteria
    Camera is connected to a Mac computer using a USB tether cord
    Connect to the capture software (Capture One)
    Adjust shutter speed, F-stop, ISO and white balance to achieve the correct exposure and color temperature
    Capture at least five images
    Images are of five different objects (you choose from provided props)
    Preview images
    Apply a star rating to each image in capture software (Capture One)

  5. Light a subject made of metal
    Assessment Strategies
    Project: Studio image
    Criteria
    Use one or more lights (hard or soft) and reflectors
    Image is of a reflective metal object on a gray paper backdrop
    At least 50 percent of surface of subject is visible as white
    Demonstrate effective use of the white reflector boards
    Subject surface is not black
    At least 50 percent of surface of subject visible as white

  6. Light a subject made of glass
    Assessment Strategies
    Project: Two studio images
    Criteria
    Interpret two supplied lighting diagrams
    Light the glass subject entirely from back and bottom
    Images are of the same subject (transparent piece of glassware)
    One image displays “dark-field” (white line)
    One image displays “bright-field” (black line) technique
    The two images are distinctly different looking photographs of the same

  7. Apply studio strobe lighting techniques to subjects
    Assessment Strategies
    Project: Two images
    Criteria
    Use supplied studio strobe system
    Images are of the same subject
    One image is lit by a hard light
    One image is lit by a soft light

  8. Apply studio strobe lighting techniques to a portrait
    Assessment Strategies
    Project: One image
    Criteria
    Interpret supplied lighting diagram
    Use supplied studio strobe system
    Use a reflector and backdrop
    Image is a portrait of a person
    Image shows effective use of a three-light setup as illustrated in the lighting diagram
