Course Information
Description
Students prepare a portfolio of their work and various business materials to apply for employment. Students are supervised and assisted in choice and number of samples, and portfolio layout. Lectures are given on job interviewing and job markets. Faculty approval of a finished portfolio is required for graduation.

    Criteria
    Selected samples reflect a diverse variety of work created during your time in the program
    Presentation of work contains organized files
    Presentation of work contains clearly articulated project outcomes
    Selected work has a clear concept with the potential for a high level of finish to reflect industry standards

  2. Practice design communication
    Assessment Strategies
    Review/simulated interview with Design Faculty or Industry Professionals
    Criteria
    Schedule and document three reviews throughout the term using written feedback forms
    Feedback forms with completed meeting notes are delivered on time as specified by the instructor
    Meeting notes reflect on design strengths, weaknesses and areas for improvements on each piece

  3. Design a concept for the portfolio show
    Assessment Strategies
    Visual Presentation
    Criteria
    Presentation contains a clear idea statement and cohesive concept visuals
    Visual concept is fresh, innovative and reflects thoughtful connection between concept, typography, color and key visuals
    Concept is inclusive of all the skill sets demonstrated by the programs participating in the show event

  4. Work effectively in a design team
    Assessment Strategies
    Group Project
    Criteria
    Communicate and respond supportively with other students to expand upon the chosen show concept
    Participate in team meetings based on production strengths
    Communicate professionally with instructors and other teams to equally share division of tasks
    Work cooperatively to support common goals
    Complete own share of tasks necessary to complete a project
    Empower team members by active listening and validating other's contributions

  5. Interpret feedback and refine existing work
    Assessment Strategies
    In-Progress Portfolio
    Criteria
    Progress of work reflects feedback given during reviews
    Demonstrate growth and progress of the body of work per timeline specified by the instructor
    In-progress portfolio includes a combination of existing work and new self-initiated projects

  6. Create your own self-branding
    Assessment Strategies
    Resume, Business Card
    Criteria
    Resume reflects past work experience, future professional goals and contains no typographic or grammatical errors
    Business card contains student-designed logo to reflect personal aesthetic
    Both elements work cohesively together as a single visual system

  7. Produce your professional portfolio
    Assessment Strategies
    Group Exhibition, Website Launch
    Criteria
    The final body of work consists of 8-10 completed projects (including two self-initiated projects)
    3-5 samples of your strongest work are submitted on time for the Madison College Portfolio show website
    Your professional website for your Portfolio is live before the show website launches
    Participate in the final Portfolio Show exhibition, as specified by the instructor
