Course Information
Description
Introduces exercises and processes to foster creativity and the development of unique ideas for graphic design, advertising and digital applications. Emphasis is placed on improving research, brainstorming, writing, speaking and critical thinking skills. Working individually, in teams and in groups, students will come up with unexpected solutions to realistic and contemporary industry problems. Visual presentations cover a wide range of levels of finish and incorporate traditional and digital media and rendering techniques.

  1. Create an ad series using a visual hybrid
    Assessment Strategies
    Project
    Criteria
    Include research of assigned brand
    Identify the target customer who is viewing the ads
    Ad series includes a minimum of 10 preliminary concepts
    Ad series shows evidence of clear hierarchy and design principles
    Final submission includes 3 ads in a series that employ a visual hybrid
    Critique and receive feedback on the series

  2. Create a campaign for Social Media
    Assessment Strategies
    Project
    Criteria
    Include research of assigned brand
    Identify the target customer who is interacting with social media posts
    Campaign includes a minimum of 10 preliminary concepts for posts
    Campaign includes a minimum of 3 concepts for a video (presented in a story board)
    Campaign shows evidence of clear hierarchy and design principles
    Final submission includes 4 social media posts and 1 video concept
    Critique and receive feedback on campaign

  3. Prepare a gig poster
    Assessment Strategies
    Project
    Criteria
    Include research and details about the chosen musical artist
    Identify the musician’s audience
    Develop a minimum of 8 initial poster sketches
    Poster demonstrates clear hierarchy and design principles
    Poster effectively demonstrates the emotion of the music in the art style using typographic principles
    Final submission includes 1 poster pencil sketch
    Critique and receive feedback on the poster

  4. Produce a logo concept
    Assessment Strategies
    Project
    Criteria
    Include research and details about the assigned brand
    Identify the target customer
    Create a minimum of 10 logo sketches (5 icons, 5 wordmarks)
    Logo concept demonstrates clear hierarchy and design principles
    Final submission includes 1 logo concept pencil sketch
    Critique and receive feedback on logo concept

  5. Employ design history to create a homepage concept

    Project
    Criteria
    3 moodboards effectively feature an art style from history
    Create 1 homepage sketch and 1 paper invitation
    Homepage demonstrates clear typographic hierarchy
    Critique and receive feedback on the design

  6. Create a concept for a public service announcement
    Assessment Strategies
    Project
    Criteria
    Include research of chosen organization
    Identify the target audience
    Create a minimum of 3 initial concepts with written description
    Storyboard includes a minimum of 6 slides
    PSA demonstrates effective concepting methods (hybrid, compare/contrast)
    PSA demonstrates new visual approach to the subject matter
    Final submission includes 1 storyboard, 1 ad sketch, 1 web banner sketch
    Critique and receive feedback on the service announcement

  7. Create a concept for brand packaging
    Assessment Strategies
    Project
    Criteria
    Include research of chosen brand
    Identify the target audience
    Project includes a minimum of 3 initial logo concepts
    Project includes a minimum of 3 initial packaging concepts (size, shape, pattern)
    Project demonstrates effective concepting methods (hybrid, compare/contrast)
    Final submission includes 3 package concepts, and 1 wildcard idea (pencil sketches)
