Course Information
Description
Practical training in production of digital composition. The student learns to solve realistic print and digital design problems from rough layout through production by completing a variety of increasingly complex assignments.

  1. Analyze printing processes

    Criteria
    Oral/Visual presentation includes research related to assigned printing process
    Oral/Visual presentation includes correct answers to questions posed is the assignment handout
    Oral/Visual presentation includes sample images of what the printing process produces
    Presentation is well organized, well designed with professional typography choices, and web links to videos of the printing process
    Differentiate between printing processes based on printing method (intaglio, relief, planographic, stencil, digital) and usage
    You meet minimum scoring standard on test identifying common industrial printing processes

  2. Provide appropriate documentation to printer

  4. Prepare images in Photoshop for high quality printing

    Correctly size image files to match image resolution requirements
    Use Photoshop
    Source images that are crisp, clear, and appropriate for a vendor’s expectations
    Convert to correct color mode, image size, and resolution required for project
    Use duotone curves to prepare duotone images

    Apply image adjustments
    Utilize crop tool
    Analyze resolution requirements for bitmap, grayscale, and color images
    Differentiate between image resolution (Pixels per Inch) and halftone screen ruling (Lines per Inch)
    Differentiate between traditional and stochastic halftones
    Differentiate between color modes and file formats used for print versus screen applications
    Examine when to use line art, screen tints, overprints, halftones
    Images meet print specifications and will produce high quality print products
