Description
This course serves as an introduction to diversity, equity & inclusion and an understanding of needs and program adaptations relative to fitness & recreational pursuits. Topics covered include history, philosophy, purpose, programming, as well as characteristics and needs of diverse populations.

  1. Investigate fitness and recreational opportunities for diverse populations

    Differentiate various diverse populations
    Summarize the benefits related to leisure participation
    Identify underserved and underrepresented groups
    Explain diversity, equity and equality and inclusion
    Differentiate international and local diversity of cultures, including immigrant experiences, language diversity, and global perspectives on race, ethnicity, and legacies of colonialism
    Compare the concepts related to diversity to your personal experience and your own personal demographic variables
    Summarize implications of the concepts to the workplace and/or personal life

  2. Explore legislation affecting diverse populations and the delivery of fitness and recreation services

    Examine the influence legislation has on leisure service delivery
    Explore the various legislation that pertains to diverse populations
    Analyze contemporary and historical systems that structure and reproduce inequalities
    Discuss the Americans with Disabilities Act and how it affects leisure service delivery
    Explain title IX and how it affects leisure service delivery
    Discuss Civil Rights legislation and how it affects leisure service delivery
    Distinguish between human and civil rights

  3. Determine the factors that are barriers to fitness and recreation participation

    Identify the common factors that prevent persons from taking part in leisure activities

  4. Summarize the design of accessible and usable fitness and recreation environments

    Explain universal design and accessibility and how they are different
    Describe the 2010 ADA standards for accessible design
    Describe concepts associated with Universal Design
    Determine when modifications are beneficial/appropriate
    Describe various types of accommodations and how to apply them in a fitness or recreational setting

  5. Determine community resources for inclusive and special recreation programs

    Identify organizations that support various medical conditions and/or disabilities
    Examine the roles of social service organizations and their resources available to create a more equitable and inclusive space
    Identify ways you and others can advocate for equality and social justice

  6. Explore developing, implementing, and evaluating fitness and recreational opportunities for diverse populations
