Description
Hands on introduction to the basics of using the personal computer; basic Windows operations and features: keyboard and mouse, folder and file management, email and attachments, word processing (MS Word) and spreadsheets (MS Excel), the Internet, search engines (Google), tips on purchasing a computer.

Course Competencies
  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the basic operations of a personal computer utilizing the Windows operating system.
    Assessment Strategies
    Turn on the computer and successfully login.
    Use cascading and pull-down menus to access and use submenus and dialog menus and to execute commands.
    Identify the different parts of a window and demonstrate how to open, close, maximize, minimize, resize, and arrange windows.
    Identify key parts of a laser printer, load fresh paper properly.
    Identify whether these 4 components are Input or Output devices, or both.
    Locate and identify the 4 basic components of a computer system: CPU, Display/Monitor, Keyboard and Mouse, Printer.
    Locate the shortcut for a web browser and bring up Madison College's home page, show where you go to change/reset your password.
    Locate and identify the parts of the desktop.

  2. Demonstrate the use of the keyboard and mouse.
    Assessment Strategies
    Identify the 9 basic key clusters on the "QWERTY" keyboard and describe what are they for and what do they do.
    Describe what the "NUM LOCK", "CAPS Lock", and "SCROLL LOCK" lights on the keyboard do and where are the control keys located.
    Describe where the "function keys" are and what do they do. Locate the "Windows" key and find out what it does.
    Demonstrate what the mouse can do, identify each of the three buttons and what they do.

  3. Demonstrate proficiency in Windows file management operations and features.
    Assessment Strategies
    Able to demonstrate your ability to use both Windows Explorer and My Computer (with the folders option toggled "on") to create, move, copy, and delete file folders.
    Are able to locate and show the 2 places where you can create a new folder and a specific type of file.
    Are able to create on either a white board or on a piece of paper a directory tree with files. Name the folders and the files.
    Then create the same directory tree with real file folders and 3x5 cards which represent the files that you have created. Name the folders and the files exactly the same way as in #3.
    Now create this same directory tree for real on the computer using either Windows Explorer or My Computer.
    Now change the structure of this directory tree by creating sub-folders, renaming files, deleting folders, moving files, copying files to a different folder. You start doing this on either the white board or piece of paper, then with the actual file folders and 3x5 cards, and then finally for real on the computer.
    Compare the results from all three locations.

  4. Demonstrate proficiency in the utilization of Madison College Student email and the utilization of attachments.
    Assessment Strategies
    Acquire a Student Email account and activate it.
    Demonstrate how to create a new message.
    Demonstrate how to delete messages.
    Demonstrate how to attach a file and send it to yourself.
    Demonstrate how to attach a file and send it to the instructor.

  5. Demonstrate basic word processing utilizing MS Word 2007.
    Assessment Strategies
    Complete the assigned word processing task using MS Word 2007.
    Open a new document and set the margins, font, font size, spacing.
    Now enter text.
    Cut, copy, paste, and delete text.
    Use spell check and the thesaurus.
    Save and retrieve a document.
    Use print preview for the document, and then print the document.

  6. Demonstrate basic spreadsheet creation utilizing MS Excel 2007.
    Assessment Strategies
    Complete the assigned spreadsheet task using MS Excel 2007.
    Enter and format labels, data (values), and formulas.
    Use the CTRL key plus the accent key to toggle back and forth between the value and formula views of the worksheet.
    Verify both the values and the formulas of the worksheet.
    Use "Print Preview" first and always before you print.
    Use and understand the purposes of all 4 tabs in the Print Preview Menu box.
    Print the worksheet showing the column and row headings.
    Maintain legibility standards and fit the information centered both horizontally and vertically on the printed hardcopy.

  7. Demonstrate proficiency in the utilization of basic Windows OS keyboard shortcuts.
    Assessment Strategies
    List and demonstrate 15 basic keyboard shortcuts.
    Demonstrate where you can find Windows OS keyboard shortcuts.
    Demonstrate where you can fine keyboard shortcuts to specific applications.

  8. Demonstrate proficiency in Internet basics including utilization of the Google search engine.
    Assessment Strategies
    Use a web browser to explore the World Wide Web.
    Use a web browser to bookmark, save, and print web pages.
    Use a web browser to utilize the search engine Google.

  9. Demonstrate proficiency in Blackboard basics: access class handouts; participate in the Student Survey of Instruction; view PowerPoint presentations.
    Assessment Strategies
    Login in to Blackboard to a specific course.
    Access documents such as handouts, open them and print them.
    View a PowerPoint presentation.
    Take the Student Survey of Instruction.
