Description
This course will provide students an opportunity to demonstrate their attainment of program outcomes through the completion of a project.  This project accounts for a small business through the accounting cycle, review of internal controls, and financial analysis.

Course Competencies
  1. Apply accounting principles and skills to a small business (double entry accounting, financial statements, ratios, and payroll)
    Assessment Strategies
    Capstone project - small business simulation
    Criteria
    complete a 12-month accounting project
    record 12 months of financial transactions in QuickBooks
    create a trial balance for each month
    identify and revise errors on monthly trial balances, prior to submission
    process monthly payroll
    prepare quarterly and year-end payroll reports
    reconcile major general ledger balance sheet accounts to ensure they reconcile
    prepare a year-end balance sheet, income statement, statement of owners’ equity and cash flow statement
    calculate ratios for the given business
    complete brief SWOT analysis
    project meets minimum score of 70% or higher

  2. Evaluate internal control structures
    Assessment Strategies
    Capstone project - small business simulation
    Criteria
    determine existing internal controls already in place
    identify strengths and weaknesses for the internal control structure of the company
    make recommendations for improvement to the company's internal control process
    document the internal control system in narrative or graphic form
    project meets minimum score of 70% or higher

  3. Prepare an alternative business plan
    Assessment Strategies
    Written product
    Oral presentation
    Criteria
    project 3 years of cash flows (revenue and expenses)
    analyze the market, operations, marketing, and financing
    write a portion of the analysis
    verbally present a portion of the plan
    plan includes 5 pages written for each group, plus cash flow projections
    presentation is 10-15 minutes per group
    project meets minimum score of 70% or higher
