Course Information
Description
This course provides instruction in the theory of operation and service of combines, headers, hay and forage equipment including balers, mower conditioners and forest harvesters. Students will learn how the equipment processes the crop, the basic components, means of service, repair and adjustments of the machines.

  1. Demonstrate safe work habits when working on equipment
    Assessment Strategies
    Skill demonstration in shop
    Criteria
    Wear steel-toed shoes, safety glasses, long sleeved top, uniform type pants or jeans
    Clothing is not loose or ripped
    Jewelry does not interfere with shop tasks
    Hair is tied back to prevent accident with moving equipment
    Clear shop area for safely raising and supporting vehicle or equipment
    Identify safety items and hazards

  2. Perform mower conditioner service and maintenance
    Assessment Strategies
    Skill demonstration in simulated work environment
    Criteria
    Examine wear and condition of mower conditioner
    Remove worn parts and installs new parts
    Select correct repair parts
    Perform correct after service tests and adjustments
    Operate machine to verify machine performs to operator's manual standard

  3. Perform square baler service and maintenance
    Assessment Strategies
    Skill demonstration in shop
    Criteria
    Examine condition and wear of square baler
    Remove worn parts and installs new parts
    Select correct repair parts
    Perform after service tests and adjustments
    Operate machine to verify machine performs to operate manual standards

  4. Perform baler knotter service and adjustment

    Skill demonstration in shop
    Criteria
    Examine condition of baler knots and knotter
    Operate knotter producing knots
    Adjust knotter to make a standard knot
    Adjust knotter to manual specifications
    Make after adjustment trial knots

  5. Perform round baler service and maintenance
    Assessment Strategies
    Skill demonstration in shop
    Criteria
    Examine condition and machine wear of round baler
    Replace belts, makes belt splices, and adjusts belt tracking and belt tension
    Remove worn parts and installs new parts
    Select correct repair parts
    Repair baler as required
    Perform after service tests and adjustments
    Inspect power train for wear and condition
    Operate machine to verify machine performances

  6. Perform forage harvester service and maintenance
    Assessment Strategies
    Skill demonstration in shop
    Criteria
    Examine condition and machine wear of forage harvester
    Remove worn parts and installs new parts
    Select correct repair parts
    Repair forage harvester as required
    Inspect P.T.O. and power train for wear and condition
    Service feed system gutterhead, blower, hydraulic and electrical systems
    Perform after service tests and adjustments
    Operate machine to verify machine performance

  7. Perform row crop and hay head service and maintenance
    Assessment Strategies
    Skill demonstration in shop
    Criteria
    Identify condition and unit wear of hay head and row crop head
    Service pickup reel, auger and feed fingers, drive system
    Remove worn parts and installs new parts
    Service row crop cut off knives, feed belts and drive systems
    Select correct repair parts
    Repair row crop and hay head as required
    Perform after service tests and adjustments
    Operate machine to verify machine performance

  8. Examine combine functions and component operation

    Criteria
    Summarize the operation of feeder house and cylinder feeding system
    Examine threshing operation of combine cylinder
    Summarize the function of separating and cleaning systems
    Summarize the operation of the hydraulic and mechanical systems

  9. Implement combine diagnostic and service procedures

    Criteria
    Identify combine diagnostic procedures to repair mechanical and functional problems
    Perform service procedures on combine components
    Perform functional adjustments to combine

  10. Implement combine maintenance procedures

    Locate lubrication charts in operator's manual
    Identify proper lubricants for the combine
